thebluefox
Basically as I said setting up an Ubuntu machine as a file server. My boss wants some people in the office to be able to access either some stuff/some other stuf/everything etc depending on who they are and the job they do. Is this just done with creating a group for each dir and then assigning the users that need to access that dir to that group? Anndd...at the minute, the office just accesses the server through Network Places as a guest, this is proving troublesome though as when a "Guest" creates a file on the server, it has no default owner and so no one can access it (I don't want to have to chown in the terminal for every file obviously....) Oor, is there another way I've completely overlooked? Thanks again chaps.

JustGav
If you are looking at just doing file sharing, would you not be better off using something such as FreeNAS which wraps it up under a nice gui (although freenas is BSD based). Konrad
https://help.ubuntu.com/6.06/ubuntu/serverguide/C/configuring-samba.html This one is Ubuntu specific, it's quite easy to understand. And here's how to install it: https://help.ubuntu.com/6.06/ubuntu/serverguide/C/installing-samba.html
Wez
As already mentioned if you are just looking for a file server then get a NAS or use a NAS distro like FreeNAS, much simpler, although some NAS are now much more than just file servers. Buffalo do some great NAS that are very easy to use and well priced, at the other end of the scale there are the QNAP units. The thing to remember is, would you be responsible for fixing it when it fails
Wez
Just to add as its fairly important, does this Ubuntu machine have any form of RAID or backup.
thebluefox
Well its also used as, or will be used as, a LAMP development server. I'm 99% sure samba is installed, I'll double check in the morning though. Oh, and no backup at the minute, although I'm planning to sort something out before we start moving everything over. Wez
If its not installed its a doddle using the Ubuntu reps. Good idea on the backup
thebluefox
Yeah I'm very familiar with the terminal etc. I only started the job on Monday, and as the design for my project hasn't been signed off yet, they've left me to amuse myself pretty much!
