Scott
As above really. I've always wanted a proper razor so I've decided to ease myself in with the safety versions of the cut throat ones. I'm not expecting much in the way of an authentic shave but I'm hoping it might get me used to the art of using such a blade. Does anyone on here use them? What do you make of it weighing in the hassles of stropping etc? Anyone use the disposable variety? What are the costs like once the kit is bought? How much time etc? I did a little googling and a little tubing but I'm finding it hard to weed out the shaving nutters from the general users (one guy had 8 different strops). CJ
During my infrequent jaunts across to Bodrum (it is just a 30 minute ferry ride from Kos) I invariably avail myself of the services of a "proper" barber who offers a shave with a cut throat razor. I wouldn't fancy doing it myself though.
trebor69
I bought a cut throat and strop a few years ago from " samuel chan " on ebay but to be honest it felt like i was plucking the hair out , now its just a toy i look at every now and again ! HaHaHa .
Scott
Well I had my first shave with my "safely version". Safe my arse, I think the only reason they call it safe is due to the fact you can't go any more than 1mm deep with the blade lol. You bend a blade in half to split it then push it into the handle, it sticks out a little for the shave. Still looks and feels mean as hell though. It cost me £1.50 for 10 blades. They reckon I should get 3 shaves a blade so I'll try 2 and see how it goes. If that is the case, I will be getting 40 decent shaves for £1.50.... sounds too good to be true. Really really good bit of kit, once I get my confidence up I think it will be fantastic. CJ, I've always fancied a proper shave at a barbers. Nowhere local does it. Good experience? Scott
... and the above post was the very last ever made by Scott before the tragic switch blade accident I'm alive..... for now. The real test will be when I get the real blade, instead of the toy one lol. I've never shaved with anything other than electric. Does that not burn? What sort of current? Sorry, the bad jokes thread is rubbing off on me the more I find myself going back to it.

Charlotte
Why bother? Surely advances in razors mean you don't have slice yourself to death? I can understand trying it once in a professional environment but otherwise it seems very silly to me.
Scott
To be honest I am a lazy fooker. I tend not to shave during the working week so by the time I get round to it a regular razor just doesn't cut the mustard. I then have to get out my trimmer & then have a shave. It is down to shear laziness. Edit: I almost forgot. According to what I have read nothing comes close to a shave using a straight blade. Far closer and less irritating than anything on the market. I can't comment on the closeness as I am too much of a chicken to really have at it just now, but I can definitely say that it is far less irritating than a regular disposable razor. I normally have to use a soothing balm, yeah yeah cue the gay jokes, I didn't in this instance.

Scott
First, don't use a cut throat razor. Second, get a decent modern razor instead. HTH I've got the Mach something or other blade and the Phillips Arcitec, the alleged best shaver in the world. As I said though, I'm lazy, I'll risk it. The one thing that is putting me off is that noone seems to use them, not a good sign that. I thought with a community this bit a few people may have given it a go.
