Ian W
I think the size of the screen plays a part to an extent, try sitting two feet away from the telly

Scott
HD is relatively low as far as resolution goes bud. 1080p is only 2 mega pixels AFAIK cinema's are up at 20 mega pixels. Might even be more now.
RedM
I think the size of the screen plays a part to an extent, try sitting two feet away from the telly ...like the kind of chavs who fill the living rooms of their tiny council houses with the biggest TV they can catch from the back of a lorry and then bang on about the image quality even though, from that distance, it looks like a f**king 8-bit video game. *breath*
JustGav
tried that, still see a massive difference from Cinema Quality to HD quality, id rather watch it on a 50'' 1080 HD Tv, That will be due to the fact that I think most cinema houses aren't digital yet.... Most digital cinemas are 4k (4096×2160) resolution, twice that of HD.

I come across this exact scenario on a daily basis at work. Folk claiming every benefit under the sun and yet they have a brand new car and a bigger telly than any regular Joe can afford. Most digital cinemas are 4k (4096×2160) resolution, twice that of HD. That is the resolution of 35mm film though. I'm pretty sure the newer movies are up around 20MP. 4-5MP was a few years back. If you took your 1080p screen and stretched the image to anywhere near the size of a cinema it would look crap lol.

Christ that must have been a while ago, Gav I'd need a lottery win to go to the cinema nowadays without it being an Orange Wednesday AND using my student discount. st3ven1
I know where you are coming from Geo, I am constantly disappointed with the picture quality at the cinema. Especially when compared to watching a blu ray. The cinema is dedicated to showing films, so you would expect a better quality picture that what you can now achieve at home. It also seems to me like the cinema is running at 50hz, I always notice lots of judder during panning shots. Still won't stop me going to see Iron Man 2. MrRalphMan
Here's a good write up... http://forum.blu-ray.com/display-theory-discussion/76649-what-resolution-do-cinema-projectors-display.html
stevie_b
I presume cinemas still use through-the-air projection. This must be a poor way of getting an image onto a screen, because it's susceptible to anything in the air (the audience breathing, farting, etc), and also the tiniest movement of the projector relative to the screen will be perceived as a wobbly picture. A screen that develops the image itself (e.g. domestic TV) would probably give a better image, but you could probably buy a small African nation for the price of a LCD/LED/plasma screen that size. The-Plethora
I think my cinema days are over, it was £5.50 a ticket last time I went to vue, I think its more like 8.50 now. Balls to that, I'll just hang for the DVD at that price.
bradleyh_15
the girlfriend and I frequent our local cinema regularly so we get an unlimited pass for £13.50 a month! well worth it when we must go at least 4 times a month! however this means I do get dragged to some poor poor movie choices by her! Matt H
Well my local cinema is now 4k, which is the current standard for cinema I think. ~ 4 times better than 1080p. Thing is, it's still only 4k pixels across the length of a cinema screen. All depends on the size of your screen - oh, and the source data, that has to be 4k to start with!
