Santorini - Anyone here been?

Just trying to plan a holiday and have no idea where I want to go - brochures only show you the hotels and the guide books are all about the positives rather than highlighting the stuff that will annoy me - Santorini looks like the sort of place I'm after so I wondered if anyone had some real world feedback?

Otherwise any suggestions for quiet, warm and scenic places with no English theme pubs, 18-30 noise and general Englishness would be appreciated :)

My folks have been to Santorini, and so have my bro and his girlfriend, they all loved it!

Oh yeah, and I'm getting married there in July.

I've been to a fewGreek islands and I am yet to find a bad one... If you want REALLY Greek, then Pefkos is gorgeous, we only saw about 20 Brits all fortnight. It was perfect for relaxing!

The locals try to pass Santorini as the remains of Atlantis (which of course it aint, Atlantis was in the Atlantic ocean lol...)

But the island has been devasted by a huge volcanic eruption a few thousand years ago, the one that created the huge tsunami that (helped) destroy the Minoan civilisation in Crete. As a result the views are dramatic, totally unique in the whole of the med. The houses carved inside the steep cliff are expensive, but well worth a try, there's nothing else like it.

I know you can't believe everything you read on the 'net (!!!) but I was browsing http://www.greekisland.co.uk last night and it seems to suggest that Santorini (or at least Thira) is packed with tourists and a bit pricey.. it also has a "McZorbas" :) But it still looks really nice and aside from the talk of tourists and price (I guess certain areas of each island all suffer this) - however I'm now swaying towards Naxos but reading more and more on the others.

I'll probably end up in Morcambe.

Last time I was in Santorini it was 1990 or 91 and I was really pissed off with the pricing of everything, very ripoff.

However, these balances change, and with the current Euro/GBP rate it might feel different nowadays.

Skiathos is very pretty. Not in the same league as Santorini of course, but at least it's not tainted by the greed of the locals.

Quiet too.

I've got a friend with a house there, in the least accessible beach (don't even know if that road has been paved yet)

  • 4 weeks later...

Update: Skiathos was really nice, small island, friendly people and quiet which was perfect for what we wanted. Amazing beaches and on the whole great weather, first too days were hot and slightly overcast but the remainder was blue skies all the way, had a great time!

Anyway I'm putting a small webpage together but have only uploaded a few pics for now, feel free to have a browse, if anyone fancies a nice break I can recommend it (although it might be busy for a few months now I guess). John mentioned that some of the roads weren't paved... most were like this and some of the island is hard to get to unless you have a boat, we spent a whole morning up in the hills and didn't see another vehicle until we came back down, just us, scenery and the giant flying flip paint beetles :)

A few random ones in there and you'll have to excuse my good lady and her love of cats (which all got names and regular food packages from her!). Little white jeep was a good laugh, RWD was great fun for drifting :)

Nice panoramics, how did you do them?

stitch pics together?

I have a Canon Ixus which has a panoramic mode to help you line up the shots, then it's a case of using the Photostitch software they provide to join them up, you can see a few lines where they meet on those but I was happy with them, they give a nice idea of the area - wish I'd taken more but I'll be back :)
