Rob_Mitchell
hello guys im doing a waterpump on my n/a and looked through some threads using the search engine regarding the timing belt tensioner reseting. i found this for the tt- Set timing belt tensioner. If you have a press available slowly press the pushrod until the holes in the pushrod and housing are aligned, the pass a 1.5mm hex wrench through the holes to keep pushrod retracted. Install the dust boot onto the tensioner. If you don’t have a press available like me, replace the tensioner onto the engine then very slowly tighten the 2 bolts a small amount each at a time and this will compress the pushrod although this is not recommended. Install timing belt tensioner. (a) Temporarily install the tensioner with the 2 bolts. (b) Alternately tighten the 2 bolts. Torque: 26 Nm (270 kgf-cm, 20 ft-lbf) © Remove 1.5mm hex wrench from the tensioner with pliers hand grenade style. now is this the same for the non turbo????? as i cant seem to compress the tensioner rod. any ideas?? pedrosixfour
NA is the same principle, compress the rod and lock with a small pin. They are a fairly stout tensioner, are you sure you're giving enough of a squeeze?
Rob_Mitchell
well tried clamping in a vice-horizontally, and no luck. any other ideas? should it be tried again but more pressure?
pedrosixfour
Well you shouldn't need to swing out of the vice to get it to move but yeah maybe try it again with a little more conviction. If you do get it to move compress it fully and the release it again to check if the rod is sticking. Do that a few times if possible. If it looks rough or won't compress at all then fuck it in the bin and order a new one. I should have my old one somewhere, I'll bring it to work in the morning and see just how hard it is to compress. We can compare notes then if you want. Kirk
Wouldnt it be easier and more sensible to replace for new? Every belt change i do i renew the lot for peace of mind
Rob_Mitchell
yeah its prob best to replace the lot whilst its all stripped down, never realised what a job it is to do a waterpump on this lol all good fun though
