Ewen
Interesting article about Teenage Pregnancies TODAY http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_incidence_of_teenage_pregnancy Saudi is not listed, which must be a good thing. Unless its listed in an article about Pre-Teenage pregnancies instead. But then I suppose the numbers would still be commendably low due to the lack of working ovaries. imi
They are going to Shari Courts (religious courts?) so I guess someone thinks it does. Its not like Christians were any better in the past, UK society has just had the opportunity to develop more. We used to make little children work in the mills and up chimmneys and girls were married off just as young. I note though that the whole point about the 12 vs 80 case is that the government are trying to bring in new laws to introduce a minimum age. Surely thats a good sign? Agree with most of the above. I personally am not a scholar of Islam or any other religion for that matter however have studied it and this is from what i know. 1450 years ago the Prophet was born into the Arab tribe of Quraysh that were particularly brutal to women, Let alone equal rights, they were treated like slaves, sex objects and a common practise was to bury newly born females (this was and until recently common in some other cultures). In order to provide women (widows, girls who lost their parents, etc) shelter & security it was then (1450 years ago) allowed for a man to marry multiple wives to give them the respect, security in the society provided that: - The woman was NOT marrying outside of her will (world first for that tribe to actually give a woman a say). - And she was not a minor - (basically had gone through puberty according to their logic 1450 years ago, that was the criteria). Nowhere in the Quran does it say that it is fine to have sex with kids, you cant marry Kids, you cant marry anyone against their wishes. Nowhere in the sayings of the Prophet does it say that either. 1450 years later in educated, 1st world developed societies I wouldn't expect anyone to tolerate a 9 yr old Child getting married regardless of whether it was their will or not. however lets not forget the UK seems to be topping the charts with some impressive teenage pregnancy numbers - obviously the society that we live in has some way to develop. imi
