Interesting W9 engine (yep, that's different)

I sh1t you not, as a 11/12y/o I "made up" an engine like that, drew the configuration, wrote down the idea and my dad Telext'd (yep that old) it to Lotus Cars.

Their Communications Manager at the time wrote back in a really encouraging way and explained where I'd gone wrong with it (well I wasn't going to teach them new trick lol) but also where it was a good idea too.

I called it the IV configuration (not meaning 4 but cause of the front view of the cylinder layout) and used 9 cylinders and ~4.5L.

Anyhoo, it's cool to see a real one. Blatently Lotus should have signed me up and patented my idea back then lol how stupid do they look now lol

Tell me you also tried to build a working model out of Lego Technics :D

Sounds awesome. Had a few ideas about magnetic suspension back when I was a kid after playing about with MTB suspension forks, it's amazing even at that young age when you can sit there and think 'I'm sure this could be done different'....

Shame you couldn't patent it :)

I wish I had that guy's drive (and funding). I've been in the game for 16 years now and I only got to lay out my "own" design from scratch last year. And even then I didn't have to get all the parts made. It would be very interesting to know how the actual engine running compared to his analysis and predictions.

Alex, we have a huge warehouse like the one at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark where we keep all your ideas until we can exploit them :-)

Broad-arrow engines aren't very new - only in cars, and even then Bugatti ultimately opted for Audi's ultra-compact doppel-V layout instead of a true three-bank design. The world of aero engines has several examples (or so our head of R&D tells me).

Cool, I believe mine will be filed under either B or R. ;)
