Chris Wilson
Just seen that someone has posted a Sports GT / Saloon race I did in 1988 at Oulton. I am in my dark Cadbury's purple Elan with a 2 litre Cosworth BDG engine. It had March F2 suspension and brakes and all the suspension pick up points on the chassis were moved up to lower it correctly, a labour of love I appear to have come third. The yellow soft top TVR was a factory car with a 2 litre Cossie Sierra turbo engine giving just under 500 BHP. The engine was at the front and the Hewland transaxle (gearbox and diff combined) was at the back. It cost a fortune and was one of the first circuit cars to have a carbon propshaft. As often happened it broke (well, it was a TVR...). The huge E type was Malcolm Hamilton's machine, which I think had a monster capacity V12 in it at that time, and the red Escort had a semi mid mounted 5 litre V8 with a huge amount of torque, a set up a bit like Ryan G's Supra on here, and was driven by the very talented Chris Maries, currently recovering from a horrific accident at Oulton he had only a few months ago. Malcolm is now distantly related by marriage (I think) to someone on here, and has moved to warmer climes. It was some time in 1988 that this happened at Lodge.... Animal
Cool vid. That SD1 amused me and there were some serious wheel arches on some of them Fords.

Holden1989
Name sounds sort of familiar, what and when did he race? I think he raced in sports and GT in a Ginetta G4, won some sort of championships in 1984 so around your time Few pictures of his Ginetta here - http://www.pistonheads.com/xforums/topic.asp?h=0&f=128&t=570435&mid=0&i=0&nmt=Modsports G4&mid=0 My Fiance's dad
Chris Wilson
Just before my time I think, ask him if he knew Malcolm Hamilton and another old time friend of mine who raced modsports, John Gallagher who was into Imps and Ginnettas and a wild MG Midget. That's a lovely G4 he had, I suppose it's long gone now, is it?
Thorin
Cool race, that SD1 wasn't really in the same class was it
Chris Wilson
Cool race, that SD1 wasn't really in the same class was it It literally wasn't. Five classes, A to E. The Jag and Escort were Class A cars (virtually any mods, any capacity, any engine) mine was a Class B (virtually any mods, up to 2 litre, any engine). Rover would Class D, (production based shell, constrained mods, any engine capacity based on original, constrained engine mods). There used to be some fabulous cars in that series that appeared in later years. V8 stroke engined Esprits, £100K plus development costs Aston Martin based silhouette cars, my full aluminium monocoque Tiga based Skoda Coupe, anything went. There was an even more radical series with March F2 based single seater Esprits, Cosworth F1 engined Capris, a crazy VW Karmann Ghia Coupe based special, DAF33 Coupe with transaxle and mega power. There's a full history being compiled of special saloons and special GT's on another site.

bignum
Cool, what sort of lap times did you pull out back then chris?
Chris Wilson
God knows, would have to get `er indoors to pull out the time sheets. Bear in mind it would have been pre the Paul Warwick accident inspired chicane. The red Zeus has done low 1:11's round Donington National with me driving. The black one a tad faster. That's one of the few circuits that hasn't changed since the late eighties. The Lola should be capable of low 1:23's in capable hands round the International circuit at Donington.
