Classic cars, Jag MKII

Starting to show my age I guess before you all start !!

I have been on the search for a classic car for some time, first of all looking at E types, then coming down to an MGB or TR6, both of which I have seen a plenty, anything from a rust bucket full on project to a mint example

The reason I looked at the MGB is that I feel I could tackle the work myself in most cases as they are a very simple design with lots of parts and info and a simple engine, job done I guess, however......

I really want to forfill the dream of maintaining a car myself with nothing more than a "How to" book and a keen willingness to learn

I went to view an MGB this weekend and the garage had a MKII JAG 3.4 in very good condition, I just loved the look of the car, a real head turner and a true classic that would be far more use than an MGB in terms of seat numbers and practicality of a larger boot (for the golf clubs)

Has anyone got any thoughts on the MKII Jag, are they easy to work on or would it be a step too far, the mechanicals looked simple enough all be it more complex than the MG's A series engine, I guess parts would be more of a challenge and expensive

Thanks in advance

I think the main thing would be the parts being harder to get and more expensive. I have no idea how they are like to work on but just wanted to comment that it would be a much more enjoyable purchase than an MGB. As you mentioned it would be harder to work on than the MGB though wouldn't think that much harder.

Good looking classic though!

The parts and any specialist work (engine, leatherwork etc) are far far more expensive than an MGB. My dad has 2 MGB's he has restored himself, and my uncle had a mk2 Jag too. The difference in terms of parts prices and specialist work is like chalk and cheese.

Thanks for this, Guess I was just confirming what I already knew ! :D

I can not see me buying an MGB now after seeing the MKII, it is such an iconic car with the ultimate classic looks for me

The leather I am not so worried about, it is the ability to get mechanical work done myself !

Your love of cars spreads far & wide doesn't it Dean :D

Lovely looking motor I have a soft spot for Jags,

It does !

I really dont think I will get the same power thrills in any other car than a Single turbo so I have to go for quirky, the Vette is that alright, but this would be an investment as well as a very cool car IMO :D

Just need to veiw a few first

I'm not sure on models and years as far as old Jags go but I always loved the one out of Cruel Intentions. Think it was a 1950's and it was definitely a roadster.

In fact, just googled it.

1954 XK-140. I'd have one of those. Would prefer the convertible one though.

Ahh never thought about that, of course being that old an original is going to cost a fortune.... doh!

I take it a replica wouldn't interest you?

No, there are a few E Type replicas about, would always know it was a fake, would rather have a MKII original

I have seen a couple of MKII's running modern Jag engines, that is interesting but still somehow wrong
