JohnA
1. How do people here deal with stuck pins? Mine are stuck to boogery, sprayed everything with brake cleaner, tried light banging with a hammer, grabbing with mole grips, nothing. Surely you shouldn't need a hydraulic press! I can't really use much force, the calipers might crack 2. Caliper bolts: are they stretch bolts, i.e. do they need to be replaced after a single use? They look and feel a lot like other stretch bolts I've seen. There is no mention of replacing them on the manual, but at 105Nm torque better double check eh? Scooter
1) I used pliers that had like pincer/snip heads......ie the heads would force there way in the gap between the caliper and pin's head. This should move the pins out a small amount and may then come out fine, if not it should be enough to get something else on it that will move them........ merckx
The pins on my front left were extremely tight aswell, just kept hitting it with a bolster hammer. When the pin diappeared inside the caliper I used a thin steel rod to keep hitting it with the hammer. Be aware that hitting it with a hammer can fatten the end and make it worse! It was too tight for self locking pliers, maybe using a claw hammer to lever it out with a wooden block under the hammer head. When it eventually came out I sanded it down to remove the corrosion which caused the problem and then give it a coating of copper grease before I put it back in. AFAIK you don't need to repace the caliper bolts.
Chris Wilson
Drill them out, use a centre punch to start the drill centrally unless you are used to accurate hand drilling. Use heat if necessary. Realize why i won't give a fixed price for fitting UK pads? I am thinking of making stainless steel ones so this won't happen so easily. is there a market? JohnA
fecken ell, I hadn't realised that it's such a widespread issue... So really I should try to get the pins out before the caliper comes out. What a sham, Toyota quality, yeah right
terawua
my pins are loose... they let my new pads move slightly, so that I get a 'clonk' noise when I come to a stop. I will be keepign an eye on them to make sure they dont wear and order a new set if I get worried.
Paul
I am thinking of making stainless steel ones so this won't happen so easily. is there a market? Good idea, I suggested this a couple of years back after having trouble with the pins on my calipers but was told it was OTT. Since then I've kept the standard ones and greased them on a regular basis with high temp stuff. Paul
