Question on the Toyota Soarer

Hi Guys,

 

I am now shopping around to replace the Supra I lost in flooding and while mainly looking at another Supra, I had a look the weekend at a Soarer TT that had a lot of toys in it (and damn, I had forgotten how comfy those seats are!).

 

Following on from the test drive, I had a question that maybe the Supra owners could answer seeing as these are probably the same parts used in both cars.

 

The Soarer I test drove was an automatic and was fitted with ABS and traction control. Now when I pressed the brake pedal firmly, say when I wanted to shift the gear from park to drive, the brake pedal vibrated under my foot.

 

Despite having had a Soarer before my Supra, it did not vibrate like that but then again it did not have either ABS or TRC so I don't know if the vibration was a normal function or an indication things were slighlty amiss.

 

As above, I am gussing it will be the same system on a Supra as the one on a Soarer so anyone any idea if it was normal to vibrate like that or not?

But in trying to answer your question.

 

I dont remember mine ever doing that. (I have TRC and ABS in a 91 TT)

 

The ABS and TRC system is different to the Supra ones. The Soarer ABS only version is sthe same I think but when combined with the TRC it uses a version that is the same for the Soarer V8.

I have an Auto TT Supra and mine does not do that (Have both TC & ABS).

 

When say vibration, are we talking quite a lot or just very minimal?

 

Also how smooth is the engine idling over? And does it have a big\loud exhaust? (Asking because it could be the heat shield or something like that shaking causing the vibration (just a thought). Also how good are the brakes? Because as you have your foot on the brake pedal in Drive it is stopping the car from moving.

Thanks guys - the car has a stock exhaust system and the engine idles smoothly. Brakes were (as near as I could tell anyway) working fine on the go and it definatley was not a rattle from the heat shield or anyother part of the car.

 

What I felt was an actual physical vibration coming from the brake pedal when pressing and holding the pedal to the floor - this happened either when the car was in park or when I was holding the pedal down to move the gear shift through the gears so was not dependant on power going to the wheels themselves (like when you hold the car with the brakes in D).

 

The vibration was not huge but it was present.

The TRC system on the Soarer (and the Mk1 Aristo and Mk2 Aristo and GS) uses a master cylinder with a pump which pumps brake fluid into a nitrogen-charged accumulator. The pump runs when the ignition is switched on, and then every few presses of the brake pedal. It's rubber mounted, and the mounts can deteriorate, accentuating the vibration as the pump runs.

 

That would probably be the first thing to check.

Interesting. It does not seem to be a normal function of the brakes.

 

Maybe I will pass on this one - it all ready needs a new radiator and two new rear tyres so if it has brake issues too it would not be long in adding up to be an expensive fixer upper!
