wheel bearing help!!!parts neeeded

Hi there I have a 94 n/a supra and it's my joy but sadly it's giving me wheel bearing problems, i'll try and tell you the full story. My rear wheel bearing went about 4 weeks ago so i changed the bearing and the hub(part with the internal spline) with new parts, which wasn't easy, and it went well until today when i noticed the car was pulling sideways while driving straight so i went home jacked the :)spaceship:) up and sure enough there was play in the rear n/s wheel 12-6 3-9 even with the footbrake down! I can't beleive it's the same wheel 4weeks later even though I bought new parts. So after hours of internet research(mostly here) I have come to the conclusion that the spline on the drive shaft must have been worn from the last bearing failure. What do you think?

I know this is a silly question but is it risky to drive with a failing bearing?Anybody know from experience? The bearing hasn't started to make any noises yet only play in the wheel I was planning on driving it untill it starts grinding as I have no other transport. I plan on replacing the bearing, hub and driveshaft will driving the car do anymore damage?

Thanks

Sorry guys I do not want any parts (will pay the membership fee this week.....ooops)

Hi nasoup, sorry I think you posted in one of my threads a wee while ago about wheel bearing play I totally forgot about it. You may be onto something about the driveshafts then, I didn't think of that. It's kind of the last link in the chain I don't see what else could be causing play as i've got new bearings and hub flanges too, although my play goes with the handbrake on so may not be as bad? Wasn't bad enough to fail an MOT anyway. I guess i'm on the hunt for some new driveshafts then :) Good luck fixing it, let me know if you get it sorted

Hi Rickeh, thanks for replying, I chose not to drive the car in the end hopefully i'v saved the hub. I got another new bearing today and I hope to fit it friday and maybe find out the main cause of this mess too. I will let you know what I find. Thanks

Get either a mint used driveshaft or a new outer C/V joint, if you havent driven it much yet the hub splines may not be badly damaged.... yet! :) Driving it will do more damage, yes.

Thanks chris as i said above i'm gonna fit the bearing on friday and have a good inspection of the splines if it's not that then I'll resort to balling my eyes out lol

I have sorted the problem with the bearing i'm still not 100% its a fix though. I took the hub apart to re-new the bearing and realised that the bearing seal, closest to the car, was not in the correct position it was presses all the way down to the shoulder so after a bit of measuring i worked out that the seal should only be pressed down so far that there is a 4mm gap so the seal can seal the spline shaft not stop the grease from coming out of the bearing. If anyone has a clue what i'm going on about could you please confirm? Thank to all for the help

Just out of interest are you using a hydraulic press to fit it up to the hub? and are these patten bearings or oem ones? did mine last year and had no problems and used the original hub, drive shaft ect...

Yes, I used a 10tonne hydrauoic press but the bearing was a koyo which I don't think is OEM. But if the non-OEM bearings don't work would they supply them to me?

Nasoup,

Did you fix your bearing problem in the end, I am just in the middle of replacing the rear left, and have similar problems but I just read chirs's post about the worn splines as by nut has loosened in the past. Just wondered if you had any more problems

Hi, sorry for the delay. I did sort the problem, as you know I changed the wheel bearing twice within 4 weeks and it was all because I was sent the wrong bearing by my supplier. We did discuss the possibility of the spline becoming worn but came to the conclusion that this couldnt physically happen. Hope this helps.

Is there a good aftermarket replacement for the wheel bearings for less than new from mr t or just be easier getting brand new OEMs?

Both the bearings I fitted were arftermarket, just the first bearing I was supplied was incorrect, the second bearing was also aftermarket but works perfectly! still on there now with no problems so I would say aftermarket bearing are fine to use :thumbs
