jonathanc
Well I know there are a lot of PC savvy folks around here so I shall try to ask my question here. I am trying to help my mate's dad to fix his PC. It's a Packard Bell (!!!) system running Vista32bit. His problem is that it takes a looooong while for it to boot up and sometimes also shut down. I pinpointed the problem to be a service that takes very long to load up. Right now I am at the stage where I can boot up pretty quick and use Google but when I try to open Control Panel for example, it will take ageeees to load. Maybe around 6-8 minutes before everything is normal again. I know reinstalling is probably the best solution but its a Packard Bell system that doesn't even come with a recovery disc. You have to make your own and since the system is mucked up at the moment there's no point of me making one now... I am trying to disable services via msconfig at the moment but its taking a long while since it takes 10-ish minute just to boot up before I can restart... I have around 12 services active and also around 9 under startup but so far no luck yet of what's causing it. I wonder if anyone encountered this type of problem before? Also, if there a way to check the loading time for each services? Many thanks.

jonathanc
My rig did this, turned out to be a hard drive was on the way out. Hmmm, that doesn't sound very good.... I will just try to disable ALL services for now and see if that makes any difference. It's a rogue process somewhere that is basically hogging the system resource. I am not sure why it lets certain programs to run (sometimes Kaspersky loads up fine but sometimes it loads up after the long wait for example). So I am guessing that if this rogue process/service loads before Kaspersky, then it will hog the system resource until its done. Gaaaah, I hate Windows sometimes
AJI
I have a laptop that did this. The problem is that vista was using too much system resources and the laptop hardware just couldn't cope. Switched to Linux Ubuntu and runs faster than any previous windows installment.
jonathanc
woo hoo problems solved!!! The culprit turned out to be "Windows Live Family Safety Service" or fsssvc. This takes ageeeeeeees to load so its hogging up the system. Disabling this service worked and now the system is mint! Advice to all : Do NOT use Windows OneCare
