ronttuk
Has anyone recently taken thier HGV test ? Im so bored sitting at home all ther time looking for a job i am thinking of selling my supra to finance HGV 1+2 training course so i have more chance of getting a job, theres always HGV jobs advertised on various job sites. Ive driven 7.5 ton lgv for years and quite enjoyed it in the past. But if i took the test would i get a job being a newly qualified driver ?? Does anyone have any expierience of doing this? If i get a job i can always buy another supra at a later date.
Dyer864
Hi mate ! Personally i would go for it, i've been thinking about this in the past, luckily i'm still in my job, driving a 7.5t van, delivering etc. and i'm seriously thinking of going for my hgv, spoke to a few drivers out and about, some say it's fine out there, some say it's getting tougher due to european drivers coming over and doing the job cheaper I was looking into a driving agency that taught you, put you thro you're test and found you a job around your surrounding area , but would have to look into the fees, and how much would you have to pay back the agency ! As you say , you can sell you're supe , and after you're up and going, go out and buy another Good luck !
Missile
I work for the (FTA) Freight transport Association. Not in a department that could help, But if you have any questions that might be of some help, i bet i can get the answer. http://www.fta.co.uk/
Chris Wilson
I took mine about 9 months back, but not to look for work, to drive a bigger race car transporter than 7.5 ton. I found it a LOT harder than I imagined. I intended to take my Class One after, but haven't got round to it yet, and the law has changed in some way, something about further competence testing on a regular basis, which sounds expensive. All I can say is when I took the test the instructors were flat out training new drivers and they all commented that they couldn't see most of them finding work.... ronttuk
ok thanks for your comments but ive got an interview tomorrow at long last so maybee im going to be an electro plater instead !!!
Konrad
It's not as simple as it used to be, you need to do CPC every 5 years, it's nothing scary really, just quite expensive. HGV driving is quite profitable, but not family freindly if you want to gain good money.
Guest Budz86
From what I see at work it's 'roughly' £1200 for a HGV license, give or take £100. There seems to be plenty of jobs out there, but a lot seems to be agency work so might not be stable. HTH
nigelboyne
ok thanks for your comments but ive got an interview tomorrow at long last so maybee im going to be an electro plater instead !!! you might have better look with a bus licence. but regards the driving of an artic reversing is the only serious issue.if you do have your heart set on driving artic try stay away from haulage/freight companys they will run the arse of ya. try the multiples tesco etc they have strong unions and higher standard and working conditions.you could also go further and get chemical licence and apply to oil companys tanker driving. best of luck
