New Skyline R33 GTR shell from Ebay, thanks Jurgen

Thought some might like to see a rare sight, a brand new R33 GTR Skyline shell, bought off Ebay in Japan, courtesy of Jurgen, the respected trader here on the Supra forum. It's sat outside Safety Devices awaiting seam welding and a new FIA spec multi point weld in cage. They are as floppy as a wet paper bag as standard, so I should be able to run some decent race suspension on it once its stiffened up. Building it as a 2 WD car, but can easily return to 4 WD in the future.

It's a long term project, going to test my new engine and new transmission in my GTS-t for now, and iron out any glitches, then transfer bits over, and return the GTS-t to a decent spec RB25 with original type gearbox, but still with decent brakes and decent road suspension and use it as a fun road car that will double as an occasional track day car if something happens to the "good" one. I spend FAR too much money on race cars, dress like a tramp, and drive utter sheds on the road :)

Very nice Chris;) , I guess it will not be road legal if its going out on the track?,just a thought thats a good building block to build and register it as new as the dvla state it only gets put on a q plate if its second hand shell and suspension.

Track car, did think of registering it, but with a weld in cage and no heater et cetera its appeal as a road car would be very limited :) I can honestly say driving on the roads these days is something I do because I have to, not for pleasure at all :(

Rear rain light and brake lights, wipers, washers, alternator and battery, starter motor and ecu wiring, plexi side and rear screens, laminated glass front screen, carbon doors, stock bonnet and bootlid, stock rear bumper, lightweight front with good I/C aperture. Centre lock wheels, decent brakes off my GTS-t and the Eibach dampers off my GTS-t, and the Tractive sequential, triple plate clutch and the new engine out of the GTS-t. The GTS-t will be retired as a rapid road car / spare track day car with the spare engine I recently built and a stock gearbox and a twin plate clutch I have acquired. With Oulton just up the road it's nice to have something you can just drive there in and (hopefully...) back again rather than loading up a trailer or the truck.

  • 1 month later...

Had a horrendous day going to pick the shell up after the cage was finished and the the interior and underneath painted and bulkhead holes sealed. I hired a trailer as my truck is out of test, and towed it with my wife's petrol and gas guzzling Jeep Grand Cherokee. Made a 5.00 AM start this morning from Shropshire and when I hit the M54 I saw the trailer side marker lights had gone out. Pulled over and found the rear lights on the Jeep and all the trailer lights were out. Had some tools and torch with me, but could I find the fuse for the tail lights, could I heck as like... :( (Anyone know where the blighter is??) No way was I turning back so I pulled the brake light switch off the pedal bracket so the trailer had its brake lights showing permanently, as did the Jeep. Always wary of running with no functioning brake lights, but had to be done. Reinstated the switch when dawn broke near Cambridge. Loaded the shell on the trailer, still on its dolly and strapped her down, weather still very pleasant. I was only told they had no ramps for the trailer at 4.30 PM yesterday when I went to pick it up. We loaded the car using a huge A frame gantry and two block and tackles with a hefty scaffold board under the dolly, with someone balancing the rear end of the shell as I backed the trailer underneath, all very worrying! Made back for home when about 50 miles north of Cambridge a serious steering wheel shake started and we seemed to be having trouble on hills :( Pulled over again, this time the LH front caliper was seizing on, I having replaced the RH front one some weeks back. Managed to avoid all footbrake usage until the pads had burnt back enough to allow free disc rotation and nursed the bloody crate back with only two brake applications in 150 miles :) To add to my annoyance it started to hammer down with rain around Birmingham on the M6, so the shell was given a good dousing. Managed to back the trailer up to the truck tail lift and level them up, and safely rolled the dolly and shell off the trailer and on to the tail lift, then up and into the lower level of the truck. All in a downpour, of course. Had enough now, her indoors is too tired for the pub, (odd, she slept most of the way there and back, so no driver in exchange for food...) and I doubt I'll get a taxi on Good Friday out here in the sticks, so I will have a night in and rest the liver :)

The good thing is I am very pleased with the way its turned out, I know shells look terrible when caged, but before being painted, but now its done I am happy. It looks a lot better for going the extra mile and having all the sound proofing taken out, all extraneous brackets and studs ground off, and the seam sealer removed or tidied up.

Next job is getting the subframes blasted and the rear one modded onto solid mounts and have them powder coated. I want to get it on some old wheels with steering, so I can move it about safely, and easily get it on to the ramp.
