Its safe to buy on the net when your safe in the knowledge that your machine is clean of virus & spy/malware. If you suppect your machine is infected i wouldnt go near it.

As for AV and spyware solutions everyone has their own favs/bitchs

I am running Sophos AV for virus protection and Microsoft AntiSpyware for the other side of life. SP'2 Firewall is running as is the Firewall on my Router. I also have Protowall and Blocklist manager going to block unwanted IP address for accessing my machine.

The above solution (touch wood) has kept me clean as a whistle and my machine is on 24/7 for P2P stuff but then i update my machine with security patchs as and when they come out. MS Antispyware updates its self every night and i manually update Sophos daily with new virus definitions.

Seems like alot of work and maybe overkill but its worth it when i listen and giggle at those less fortuate :eyebrows: .

Those of you who are PC aware it would be worth loading Protowall and Blocklist manager just to see how many packets are being thrown at your machine, its a real eye opener :ecstatic:

Kerio Personal Firewall is another pretty good free firewall. I use AVG as well.

For the Spyware the two best I've found, and I've tried a fair few, is Microsoft's Anti-Spyware ( :( I'm sorry, I wouldn't normally recommend MS software, but it's actually pretty good)

The other that has worked really well is ad-away (not ad-aware) Ad-Away Download

You normally need to do most of this in safe mode. If you've got XP or ME you'll want to turn off system restore, else you could end up getting infected again.

Have you told AVG to search and destroy virus's, will be honest that i have never used it but with Sophos you tell it to find and then what to try and do (delete/disinfect etc). With some virus's you need to get at them at a lower level of operating system (either dos or safe mode command prompt) and then either running your AV (dos version) or get shot of manually. If your running XP/2000 have a look in the registry at whats being loaded at startup

HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN

HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUNONCE

HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUNONCEEX

HKCU\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN

HKCU\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUNONCE

If i dont like the look of entries in here i get shot of them but then i do know a little about the little beggers.

Also while your at this level have a look at whats being fired from startup.

I looked at your earlier post and i will be hosest i dont think i have ever seen a Blue Screen that shows a virus (lucky i guess). Are you sure you have a virus and not just a bit of hardware/software thats causing the unstability.

AOL?!?!?! :thumbdown

This disc you should take to one side and :bang:

Is the blue screen like a desktop picture?

It's just that the other day I had to fix a XP machine with spyware on. The guy was telling me that it kept getting these Blue Screens. When I actually saw the machine, it was just a picture on the desktop.

I ended up using system restore as mentioned earlier in this thread.

The problems with a lot of these is that they run services and registry entries to put everything back if anyone attempts to remove them.

You could spend hours (or even more hours) going throught the system trying to eradicate the spyware. If the system restore doesn't work it might just be quicker to format the system and start again.

One last attempt could be to use HiJackThis.exe - If you do a search for it you'll find it.

The only problem with this one is that it displays all addons to IE, windows XP, etc. You need to remove the correct ones, else you bu99er it slighty.

Trust me I've been driven mad trying to get rid of these in the past.
