J-spec rear brake calipers

Recommended Posts

My rear calipers seized, and I had to get my car into the garage last week pretty sharpish.

New blueprint parts are £175 each and refurbs are £125 each, so for now my mechanic's just freed the old ones off.

One of my friends has said he'll help me rebuild them, which is going to save me a load of money (which I don't have at the moment). Is there anything I need to know before we start? Any parts kits I need to buy from Mr T, or anything like that?

Failing that, does anyone have any good condition rear calipers? :)

both my rears have siezed at different times so i pulled out the back pad stuck a screwdriver in there and pushed the pedal so the piston came out further pulled back the rubber cover on the piston and cleaned it up with fine wet n dry then smeared it with copper grease pushed the piston in and out a few more times bit more grease and so far they are working well for 6 months now .

its a common fault with these

I would go with the rebuild, a referb kit from Toyota is nowhere the cost of replacement. Be very sure that you know what you are doing before using any thing harder than a wood on the pistons and bores. Rebuilt properly they should be as good as new. Be clinically clean when reassembling. If the bores or pistons are scored, get new ones.

It is not really a common fault as the brake callipers and seals should be checked in service. If they seize then it is probably a sign that maintenance has been neglected and damaged seals have been left on the car.
