passat estate??? huge boot space and very cheap to buy... quite reliable

you find estate cars are generally cheaper than their counterparts hence you be able to pick up a good deal..

Friend of mine picked one up for £1200, S-reg TDI jobbie. Tidy enough and economical.

The newest and lowest mileage RWD Volvo estate you can find. Bulletproof, easy to work on, loads of used spares should anything nasty happen. I have run them for 20 years plus.

If you want something quick and 4 WD get a Nissan Stagea RS4 like the wife's. I paid £1700 for it and it's mint, should be cheaper now she's had it ages.

:) Forgot to end this one...

You will be pleased to know that I ignored you all, did no research whatsoever and bought the very first car we looked at. Everything I told my daughter not to do when buying a car. I didn't even haggle much. I'd been beaten into submission well before we left the house....wife and daughter yapping on for hours on end has a lobotomy effect on me.

By the time the deal was done it was getting dark, cold and rush hour...we had 45 miles to travel and my daughter was driving a strange car...I told her to follow me, drive carefully and flash me if there was any problems with her new car. We got half way home, just past Rownhams / M27 and she started flashing frantically, pulled onto the hard shoulder with hazzards on.

Shit I thought, its buggered already...ran back to her car and asked what was up...a warning light had come on the dash so she stopped...a warning light in the shape of a snowflake....

1999 Focus Estate Ghia. Shes very pleased with it, fantastic condition throughout. Its got loads of 'stuff' in it, room for the two wolves in the back, and a snowflake light.
They are pretty good, colleague has one which he uses as a daily driver to the station & even in the snow had no issues getting it about!
