Dash Rendar
I'm sure some of you will see the irony in this... My air conditioning has stopped working today. When I press the button, the engine revs rise and I hear a hissing from somewhere on the left. But no cold air comes out. I had it regassed about a month ago (it was empty when I bought the car) and the people that did it ran leak tests and didn't find any problems. It's been working until today. I've just done the test where you press the AUTO and RECIRC buttons. These are my findings: All buttons flash four times (including the first flash which happens when the key reaches the on position in the ignition). The rear demister button then continues to flash indefinitely. Does this help? Anyone know what's happened to my poor air conditioning? Dash Rendar
Sounds familiar Oh good. Does that mean you have the answer to my problems?
Paul
No sorry mate, I posted a few days ago as mine has just packed up. Different symptoms though, no change to revs, bugger all. And my led above the through air is on when I run the diagnostic thing but still waiting for a reply. I had mine re-gassed too about 8mths ago. Dash Rendar
I think those symptoms are what happens when there's no gas. That's what mine was like before I had it gassed.
Paul
Yeah, that's what I thought but it was meant to have been leak tested in September and regassed? At this rate it'll cost me a fortune in gas and there won't be an ozone layer left in a couple of years
Keith C
Hmm - that sounds normal, with the demister flashing meaning the sunlight sensor isn't detecting sunlight - usual if you're doing the test in the shade/dark.
Dash Rendar
Thanks Keith. I'm gonna take it back to the place that regassed it today, since the work came with 3 month warranty. See what happens...
Dash Rendar
Bugger. The place that did the air conditioning said they couldn't find a leak using the standard leak tests. BUT, they reckon it's losing gas when it's being driven. They say it's too inaccessible and they don't have the facilities to diagnose a problem like this. Can anyone help? I don't know what to do now.

Paul
Booked a new guy to come and take at look at my air con and he is charging £65 to empty whats left of the gas, do a high pressure test on it (??????), run UV dye through to see if any leaks, clean it out and refill. I thought this was OK price wise, I told him that I only had it done in September by another company and he said it should have lasted much longer. He said that the most common thing to leak was the condensor thing infront of the radiator? If this is shot then can they be repaired and if not how much are they new? Dash Rendar
Took the car to a local garage who put in some dye and told me to come back a week later. I took it back today and they told me they've identified my slow leak. It seems my whole system is fairly rotten and they're telling me I could do with some new bits. The garage dude is gonna get some prices for me, but he also recommended I check out the forums... So please have a look at this thread if you think you might be able to help me sourcing components! Thanks!

Paul I recently bought a new condenser from Toyota. Cost £264 IIRC. Tried a number of places to get a cheaper one but no one could get one. Defintely couldnt repair it. TrickTT
Regassing an empty system without finding out why it was empty in the first place is a waste of time. Air con gas contains oil which is used to lube the compressor and various seals in the system. If its not used, all the oil settles to the bottom and the seals dry out causing the gas to leak out. Regassing adds new oil, but if the seals are badly perished, the new oil won't soften them up enough to completely stop any leaks. If this is what has happened to your system, then the only proper fix is a complete rebuild, renewing all the rubber parts. Top tip: switch on your aircon (max setting) for at least 20 minutes every week to keep the oil circulating round the system.
Steve
I had to get mine regassed after fitting the new condenser. They had to vac the system for 45 mins to clean it all out, they then added some compresseor oil. Then regassed the system. Now have ice cold air con.
