Class One
My 30 year old Gloworm gas boiler packed up yesterday. It did it about 2 yrs ago, and last time the thermocouple was the culprit. Methinks it's gone again (as it wasn't replaced) as I can get the pilt light to fire up but it won't stay lit once the gas valve primer is released. I'm off to Wickes to buy a universal replacement, are they easy to fit? Is it something I can do myself?
Chris Wilson
Usually very easy, but I would take the old one as a sample. I get stuff from a company in Stockport, Cheshire, called Boiler Spares. You are, of course, Corgi registered.......?

lui
If you get hold of a universal thermocouple that should do the job has loads of adapters in packs to suit 95% of boilers
Class One
Well that didn't work. Arse.
Chris Wilson
What, the thermocouple or someone signing it off? Is the pilot jet hole bunged up? If not enough gas comes out it won't get the T/couple hot enough to trigger.
Class One
The Thermocouple Chris. The pilot lights but when I release the gas control switch after 30 secs it goes out just like it did before I replaced the thermocouple. I've checked all the wiring etc, but alas this one has probably beaten my limited knowledge and skills.
Chris Wilson
I'd clean the pilot jet out next.
geordielad87
Best advise mate get the thermo up and going again and get a price for new boiler etc and get it sent off 2 the goverment and try get urself £400 towards it. We've had loads of jobs due to this grant they've brought in but its only for the 1st 125,000 people so do it quick
Class One
Got it sorted, it was the thermocouple, I had pinched it when threading it down the back. All sorted now though.
Pete
Couldn't you recoup the cost of a new boiler in 3 years of efficiency savings? I'm thinking of replacing our 12 year old for something which is now 15% more efficient.
