TrevS
Theres no way I can trailor it so it might be a case of sticking with the current garage
nevins
how bad is it sticking have you got a constant groan
TrevS
No, can't even notice it at slow speed and a knocking noise occurs at motorway speeds. Just worried that the garage might have already stripped the brake down and might not drive the same if they refit the disc and pad. nevins
so the cars already at a garage, if they say they can do it and its stripped let them have a go at it mate.
JamieP
If using oem parts there price seems good to me, seems a little harsh to me taking the car away from them after they have done the fault finding.
TrevS
If using oem parts there price seems good to me, seems a little harsh to me taking the car away from them after they have done the fault finding. I am sure they will charge me for finding the fault. Its just they aren't a specialist so I was concerned that they might charge me too much for the parts. Not concerned about labour charges as I imagine they will be the same where ever. Ill get them to break down the cost of the parts and labour and post up here to see how they compare to others on cost.
nevins
iirc caliper repair kit is in the region of £
TrevS
Right. My local garage is fitting an exchange unit caliper and ferodo discs and pads on Monday. They have estimated it to be £380+VAT. Just want to check that I should be paying this much for replacement parts and those discs? Trev
Dnk
i posted a price list for you and with a cheaper labour rate labour rates vary massively from garage to garage. Regarding the parts why dont you order every thing yourself via Steve Manley and save a few ££'s
TrevS
If its only saving a few quid then its probably not worth it. I just wanted to get peoples opinions on the price based on the fact they are ferodo discs and not Toyota OEM.
AlexM
Approx £260 in parts My local garage is fitting an exchange unit caliper and ferodo discs and pads on Monday. They have estimated it to be £380+VAT If you consider the prices Dunk checked for you, you're paying up to £185 in labour there. That's one hell of a lot for a few hours work. If its only saving a few quid then its probably not worth it. I just wanted to get peoples opinions on the price based on the fact they are ferodo discs and not Toyota OEM. Ferodo discs aren't going to give you any benefit, Toyota OEM are perfectly fine. Personally I would get the caliper refurbished, or buy a replacement on the for sale forum here. Get some new OEM discs or secondhand ones, a full set of Chris Wilson's Fast Road pads, and some quality fluid. Either pay someone else to fit all that or do it yourself (it's very easy!). I picked up a full set of calipers, discs and pads on here for
Dnk
I have just called a Ferodo supplier and they quoted me £115 inc vat for front discs and pads for your car !!! The ferodo supplier has just called me back and said there are 2 types it could be and the other is £258 inc vat, dependant on wheel size ?? i guess this could be uk spec perhaps ? Personally i would fit Toyota parts and refurb the caliper, it doesnt take long to do, to give you an idea if you gave me the caliper i could have it done in under an hour no problem with new seals and pistons fitted !! While your doing this i strongly recomend you check the other seals on the rest of the calipers, they also will be on the verge of doing the same if the outer seals havent been changed !! Dnk
This was just a garage i called off the Ferodo's website and to be honest i'd rather not get involved as i dont know them in the slightest. Heres there website http://www.ferodo.co.uk/ferodo_home/car.html There is a map of the country you can use to find your nearest supplier. The one i called was in Wolverhapmton, A & E services and their tel is 0121 557 1977 I can assist you with o/e parts and recomend Steve Manley at Inchcape Toyota in Oxford who i know very well. 01865 291 333, i called him earlier to get the prices i posted here for you. TrevS
Right one last question. What size are the discs? I am speaking to a supplier that needs to know before he can give me a quote. Cheers Trev
TrevS
Apologies I am back again. I've got the garage to break down the quote and they are saying its the replacement caliper thats going to cost the most money. Pads £52.14 Discs £97.70 Labour £110.45 Total £259.69 However with the caliper on top they have quoted £446.50 so they are charging me £186.81 for the caliper which seems like a lot. Should I go for a used caliper? Silverstone motors have said they have some in stock and Chris W also thinks he might have some. Trev They are being lazy mate, they don't want to go to the hassle of stripping the caliper. This means that they haven't even done so, they have just put the car on a ramp and span the wheel. Take it to CW, get his 2nd hand parts and be done with it. You can then sell what you have on here. What is wrong with your discs by the way? Seems a bit excessive that you need 2 new discs and 4 new pads for 1 sticking piston. Whoever you have left it with are going to rip you off, they aren't going to see the benefit of a lot of money but you will have the diss-service of paying for their lazyness. They said the drivers disc was very hot and couldn't gaurantee it hadn't warped and that the discs come in pairs do they'd replace both. Scott
They said the drivers disc was very hot and couldn't gaurantee it hadn't warped and that the discs come in pairs do they'd replace both. If I was replacing 1 disc I would indeed replace both. I would be checking the disc to make sure it was fooked before replacing it though. If it is warped slightly a skim will sort that right out and you would have near enough shiney new discs. All you need to do is check the thickness before you start to see if it is worthwhile. Most machine shops will do it for buttons. In my eyes what you are proposing is a waste of money, I don't mind spending money on things but I hate to see it wasted. Oh, what is wrong with the pads? Have the worn right down due to the sticky caliper? It seems to me you noticed the problem fairly early. I know that pads can wear down quick with a sticky caliper but I wouldn't rule them out just yet.
Dnk
Thats a joke mate and your garage are obviously just part changers, £187 is approx the cost of a brand new caliper from Toyota !! Your caliper could be fixed and the other side fitted with new seals for a lot less than that. Are they fitting a brand new caliper ?
