nevins
Well I woke up this morning ready to do some work on the supra. On opening the door to the supra to go up to my garage I look into the car in confusion. The thing causing this was that my seat was completely horizontal and I did not leave it this way lol. Also when opening the door a nice smell of burnt electrics greeted me. When trying the switches the recline did not work and the seat would only move forward, Still not thinking straight I kept paying with the switch moving the seat forward in morbid curiosity. Pretty stupid thing to do when it does not move back So the mission begins, to find out what caused this and to drive the car 2 miles in this position and to top it off up some nice steep hills. First of all trying to drive a supra while six foot two and cramped up into the dash while holding myself in a tight sit up is not good. Also pulling off and going up hills is a killer when driving like this. After speaking to Keron and getting some sound advice, it was time to get to work. Now this would be easy you would all think. Then the first problem struck, how the hell to strip the seat while its still bolted in as the mounting bolts for the seat are tucked away and in unable to be got to. So out came the quarter mm spanner and screwdriver bit. Once the covers were off I was able to get at the motor on the seat to wind it back with a 12mm socket and ratchet. One thing to mark of the list. next was not so easy as winding back the seats movement was easy, now the recline was not so easy. After swearing a bit and a fag plan B came into action, two lengths of wire and by pass the switch by short the motor. Job done the seats now in the correct position. Now came the time to find out what caused it. Removing the switch from the seat the problem become clear. The day before numb nut ie, Me forgot that I had put a can of relentless down the side of my seat, and when getting out of the car I had pushed it into the controls and they punctured the can. Realizing this I immediately started to clean it up and then Licking my wounds went into the house. Now over night the energy drink got to work slowly shorting out the switch which must have lowered the seat bit by bit as my alarm did not go off. thus leaving me to find the seat as I did this morning. The switch once stripped was in no fit condition to be repaired as it had melted all the plastic internals and burnt the contact points away. I am extremly lucky that I have a supra left as this could easily have ended worse and leaving me with, charred remains resembling a supra. So just a word of warning be careful if you have an electric seat as there is a constant live feed to the seats and if you do something dumb like me or forget to close your window and it rains you may end up in the position I was in so please take my mistake as a warning. Chris Wilson
Electric seats are a total PITA. The one in the wife's Jeep moves every time you turn the ignition on, to some pre set memory position. Like most Chryslers the gizmos are rubbish and it won't take on a new memory. The position it goes to suits neither of us. A proper manual seat adjuster would solve all this hassle, and save a load of weight and complexity. The heater now won't go on the screen, so another servo has packed up. DON'T buy a Chrysler, a pal works on them a lot (he's in a Jewish area and they love the 300C as it's the equivalent of a Jag to them nowadays). He says they are utter junk, and from my experiences with Jeeps and Crossfires it doesn't surprise me.
