Engine vibration = engine mounts?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone out there has had the same problem with their Supra.

Recently when idling the car/engine has started to vibrate more and more. Not so noticeable when driving normally.

Even before the HKS Hiper and CW de-catt downpipe the problem existed. Now it is much worse :sly:

My initial thoughts are with the the engine mounts slowly losing their oil, thus less engine 'cushioning'.

Has anyone else had this problem and if so, how difficult to replace the engine mounts or what else could be the possible cause?

How long can I live with this vibration before something major breaks or falls off? :(

Any help would be appreciated.

Hmmm, that's a thought. I have noticed recently that when dropping into 2nd whilst decceleratin, there is a definite 'clonk' that I haven't noticed before. I better get someone look at that also.

That poses another question - are there any other mounts I should be looking at on the engine or gearbox?

I know there are 2 oil filled types on either side of the engine and now know there is also one on the rear of the gearbox to look out for:rolleyes:

Cheers

Not sure if the NA has hydraulic mounts but if it does then certainly worth checking. Are they damp at all, i.e. as if the fluid is leaking.

Mate, I have exactly the same symptoms as you from my TT auto. Decellerate down to 2nd or 1st and there is a big clonk/thud. Also mine seems to be vibrating a bit more than usual. I was going to check the trans fluid but now the rear gearbox mount too.

Er where do I look? (don't say under the car you buggers)

Cheers

Loks/Justin, I have the same as you, when ever I put it into second, I get a clonk. I have asked about this and supposedly its fine for the gear box to make that noise. Something to do with the design. I have been told that the gear boxes are pratically bullet proof, and no one has ever heard of a gear box breaking on them. I remember I was talking to someone on here and they said that they thought they had problems with their gear box, as when his car was sat on his drive ticking over, he was getting this horrendous noise from the gear box, but nothing was wrong with it. I think the gear boxes on the Supe are designed for use/load/life not quietness/smoothness. Mine is quite notchy as well, not the nicest of boxes to use when your out on that quiet country lane going for a leisurely drive, but as soon as I hit that dual carriageway, and start throwing the gear changes together in a few second intervals I know it'll get me home.

I too have a vibration problem. Haven't had the car for long, but you soon get tuned to new noises and I'm sure it's getting worse.

Also had a few clonks but only over bumps rather than gearchanging.

Like to hear your progress!!

Cheers,

MARTIN

Cured the vibration problem with 2 new engine mounts and 1 gearbox mount - cost, as far as I can remember, was under 200 quid including fitting. Quick and easy job if the garage has the equipment (monkeywrench) and an engine lift (Oddbod).

At idling now, it purrs like a kitten and growls like a tiger

I had 2 garages take a look at the vibration problem and both said that it was not the engine mounts and blamed the Hiper exhaust for the vibration :(

Well I was too fed up with sitting at the lights with my dentures being shaken loose all the time , that I decided to go ahead and fit new mounts anyway and the garage was a little embarrased when the vibration amazingly disappeared.

Let us know if your vibration disappears too - good luck.

Gordon - SNAP

Got some TRD OEM bilstens and the major shocks clonking was elminated but depending on the exact type, driving comfort is an issue. In hindsight I would say the yellow colour would probably be more desirable....
