NTFS to FAT32

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine has got a DVD player with a USB input and has also bought an ext hard drive to load films direct via a USB cable.

She has encountered a problem whereby the DVD player gives an error of "Unsupported USB".

After checking the interwebnet, I have come across this site and the issue they discussed regarding NTFS and FAT32. She has used a friends Ext HD that has FAT32 and this works OK.

As her HD is NTFS I am thinking that changing it to FAT32 should cure the problem and I was going to try the sites they recommended but was wondering if any of you folks could recommend an easier / better way (or web site) to do this.

Do you know how to format a usb stick in wondows?

Its the same principle.

Go into my computer and right click on the drive thats plugged in and select format. You you then be given an option in a drop down box (file system) to have ntfs/fat32/exFat etc.

Try that. let us know if you get a rights error pop up.

Well, bugger me (and exclamation rather than an invitation), I didn't know it was that simple! I will tell her to give that a try tomorrow.

Thank you.

But like i said she may get the rights error pop up or be lucky and wont. I had this issue the other day with a ntfs external but needed it to do other stuff.

She can try that tomorrow and report any errors. I can then come back and get even more advice to allow me to go back to her and look cleverer than I really am. :D

Dont forget also that FAT32 has a file capacity limit of 4GB if my memory serves me right. Have this problem trying to play stuff through my Playstation 3 via a 500Gb USB hard drive.

She should be OK on that score as she only wants to playback films

You might find that windows will not let you format in FAT32 if the drive is over a certain size (32GB IIRC), depending on your version of windows. Windows 7 Definatly will not let you.

There are lots of small apps that will do this for you, ranging from a full blown Partition Manager to stand alone apps like SwissKinife.

I just mailed her and told her I had thought of something else :innocent:

She got another friend to try and reformat it via being connected to her PC but she says that the only option was to Xfat and after doing that the DVD still would not recognise it.

I will now get her to drop it off with me and try the SwissKnife program suggested earlier.

I've just used SwissKnife and on my Win 7 box, it didn't work.

Now using fat32format.exe, seems to be doing something but takes a while on a 500GB disk.. :(

Do you think it didn't work due to Windows 7 not being supported? If so we should be OK as she is running XP. If not, do you have a link to the other program to try or is it the one I linked to earlier in the thread?

Also, approximately how long would a 500gb drive take to reformat to FAT32?

It finished as soon as I posted this up, so it wasn't as long as I though.. :)

I've attached the other program I used here.

Just extract it to the root of your C Drive, and then open a command prompt.

c:\fat32format.exe x: where x: = the drive letter for the external drive.

** EDIT **

Yes, I think it was down to it running on Windows 7, so might be ok under XP.

I just realised that they have decided to come visit me with the HD tomorrow for me to sort it out here and guess what? I am running 7 too!

Bugger!!
