Guest Suprafly
My drivers side front caliper is binding, when I got back from work earlier I put my hand on the whole wheel and I could have took it off and used it as a barbie it was that hot. Sooooo I'm thinking the seals have gone, now is it worth buying a service kit from Mr.T or am I best off buying a new caliper? Also are these service kits pretty simple to fit or are they a real chew on? Does anyone know what price Mr.T are asking for them?
garethr
Assuming it's a "J-spec" caliper, the first thing to check is the sliders. The caliper itself may be OK.
Swampy442
As Gareth said, the caliper might be OK, the slider pins are the first place, then the caliper seals. No point of buying a new one, just refurb the old one
Dnk
If it is a siezed piston then its because the outer seals have failed and water etc has got behind it causing corrosion on the piston and piston bore, the only potentially hard part in fixing this is getting the siezed piston out but it can be done if you have the right tools. Also as long as the damage isnt too bad the caliper piston bore can be cleaned out with wet and dry paper and just fit a new piston, inner & outer seals, very easy job to do. I'd recomend if it is the outer seals failing to buy the kit from Toyota and replace them on all your calipers before it happens to them as well. HadeS
I have got the same problem atm. It is easy to do (1 side is done already) To take pistons out just take off caliper. Use brake and look how easy it's comming out.
Guest Suprafly
Ok thanks chaps, I reckon I'll take off the wheel and have an examine this afternoon, if it is the piston seal then that should look apparent I'd have thought. Anyone know the cost of these service kits? I've seen some on eBay but I'd rather get them from Toyota.
Dnk
Buy genuine seal kits from Toyota, i think on a uk spec the kit to do both front 4 pot calipers is around £38, thats inner seals, outer seals, bleed nipple covers, small sachet of grease and the outer seal securing rings
nevins
Had this problem and in the end got 2 calipers of keron , job done.

Use brake and look how easy it's comming out. You have to stop the non siezed pistons from coming out or they will pop out before the siezed ones move though, that was the only problem i had as one was very siezed and took some freeing off before it would come out. On a j spec 2 pot its easy as you can leave the caliper bolted in place and just remove the pad on the siezed side, not so easy on a 4 pot though ! The trouble with buying second hand calipers is unless the outer seals have been changed there going to be more than likely 10 + yrs old and will also fail in the near future. Changing the seals is easy and then your pretty much as good as new
