Suprab1
Hi all just wondering about connecting my laptop (Dell inspiron 6400) to a tv. I got a s-video lead, plugged it all up but it just flashes on the tv for a second. The lad in the shop said my computer must not be able to connect to the tv. I was just looking at the lead and it has 4 pins my computer has 7. Can this be whats wrong as i'm sure it doesn't have an s-video socket in it for a laugh cheers. JustGav
Have you tried the function keys to extend your desktop, Fn-7 sticks out for some reason. Also check control panel to see that the desktop is enabled. S-Video is definitely just 4pin, that I do know.
Meko
S-video connector on laptops is 7 pin female, but you'll need to do the FN + F(key) to switch to an external monitor.

Pot
2 things spring to mind... Does your 'S-Video' output port on your laptop have any colour around it? (Green/Purple) How many holes does the S-Video input on your TV have?

(Green/Purple) How many holes does the S-Video input on your TV have? No colour around it and the s-video wire only has a single pin on the other end. I have to plug a jack to jack lead from headphones to the audio on the tv.
Pot
the s-video wire only has a single pin on the other end That surely isn't an S-Video connection? Can you take a pic of it? EDIT : Best to take pics of 'everything'
Meko
doesn't sound like one but it's sticking a picture on the screen and then going off so it's passing a signal down it.

Suprab1
S-Video to RCA cable by the look of it. So should this work?
Pot
Ah, so it's S-Vid to composite (The single pin end) - According to this http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3089 it is an S-Vid connection, so no worries about it being a PS-2 one... Does your TV have more connections round the back? Ones that look like phono connections, red white, and yellow, if so, plug it into the yellow one and see what happens... Meko
it should yeah but an S-Video to RCA should have 3 cables, picture and 2 for audio so unless you're not bothered about sound it'd work. It could be the TV, video card could be set to too high a res / refresh rate.
nevins
Has your tv got a vga connector. Its the same as a pc monitor lead. This is what I use to connect to my plasma.
