Chris Wilson Posted January 23, 2010 Share Posted January 23, 2010 The torque converter holds a LOT of fluid, the sump relatively little, the only proper way to change auto box oil is wasteful as you need to flush out the cooler pipes, the converter and the sump contents. If you aren't very careful you can run the pump pretty dry of oil, which probably won't do it a power of good. If the box has failed and slips the only way to ensure total future reliability is to fit a new or rebuilt converter, as it will hold onto its shrapnel like a magnet.
