S44M KT
Hey Guys, Just wanted to make you aware of a website called Freecycle. Some of you may know about it, but for those who don't then this is the reason for my thread. The Freecycle Network™ is made up of 4,878 groups with 6,916,000 members across the globe. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& receiving) items for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good items out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer and membership is free. Im a moderator for two local groups in Wales, and can honestly say that this site is fantastic for getting rid of any unwanted items from household furniture, to clothing, garden equiptment and sometimes ever cars etc. You are also able to post "wanted" requests, so long as they are not ridiculous, and 9 times out of 10 you will get floods of people offering you the item you require. Anyways, for those who are interested, and i hope people do take notice of this and join in, the link is: http://www.freecycle.org/group/UK/?noautodetect=1 Thankyou for reading If you have any problems then feel free to pm me
stevie_b
I've joined the Basingstoke freecycle. In principle it's a very good idea, but a couple of niggles I can remember: 1) I had to join via Yahoo Groups. Not a massive problem but just an extra hoop to jump through. Is this still the case do you know? 2) I remember the threads being hard to search. Maybe that was just me not taking the time to learn how to use the interface properly. I use mozilla thunderbird with the webmail plugin for it. However anything that is any good is usually snapped up straight away sort of negating the reason for the search
ronttuk
i use freecycle but theres loads of scammers on it now but you do every now and then get some good stuff from it but be aware you will get 100s of emails everyday
S44M KT
You can disable the email system, therefor you will not receive any emails from freecycle until you choose to turn the feature back on. As for having to go through yahoo, i know that the cardiff freecycle runs through a yahoo groups, but the groups i moderate run directly through freecycle itself so im afraid i cant really help on that. Im not sure what scams you have seen go on in your area, this is the first ive heard of anything like this happening on freecycle, and have never had nay problems with my groups. If you do spot something that isnt right then you must report it the the group moderator so that otherls dont fall victim too.

Charlotte
It's great sometimes if you can get something that you genuinely need. Some people are soooo cheeky on there though, asking for their whole house to be kitted out in free stuff.

MisterSheen
My cousin also recommended this site when I needed to get rid of some bits/bobs I couldn't leave it quick enough after one particular numpty wanted to take 100 cd singles from me after sending an e-mail in the early hours one night - did not hear from them again for over a week by which time I passed the singles on to someone else When I informed them the singles had now been taken by a woman collecting for charity, they promptly reported me to the moderator that I had agreed to give them the singles and that I had gazumped them so to speak Even though I had made no original contact agreeing anything of the sort, the moderator sided with them! To add insult to injury, when I informed the moderator of the actual events, they did not even have the decency to respond to me I had one guy turn up for an office chair who then only moaned as to the size of it, whilst with others they generally found it a huge struggle to even say thank you when taking away my items I just use my local charity shop now, as at least it goes to a good cause
AntD
In principle Freecycle seems good.I joined last summer and gave away all sorts since then.I've picked up two or three items myself. You do get the odd numpty that promises to collect something then never turns up.
