Lee_e
Hey guys Kinda hard to describe, but ill give it a go. whilst driving home doing "some speed" down the motorway I hear this really savage metal drilling/ moaning noise which sounded like it came from under the auto shifter. Its never done this before, and iv done "that" speed a few times, it was worse enough for me to slow down quite considerably but as soon as i let off the gas very slightly it stopped.?? taking a rather risky risk i decided to pull over , then pull back onto the motorway and go up through all the gears to check all is well with the auto box, all was fine, i then decided to take it back to the speed i was going when i heard the "noise" and low and behold it didnt do it again. Now i know i need a new aux belt but my existing one isnt that bad. would the sound be the belt slipping? or something else ?? it really didnt sound like it was coming from the front where the belt is. i have an Auto , Jspec TT facelift 97 BPU Any help would be great as im pretty nervous now cheers lee Edited January 22, 2010 by Lee_e (see edit history)
jimwire
I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a rear brake caliper sticking. Only happened above 90 leptons. Might be worth a look.
trinitom
i have noticed the same problem on mine going above 60mph, but i think it's gearbox related since the sound seems coming from under the gear shift and disappear when i press the clutch pedal. i know my clutch bearing it's F**** so it could be the reason for that. pistonbroke
I would get underneath the car and have a poke around, check for anything obvious like G/box oil leaks. Then I'd check the G/box oil (this is not a case of just checking the dipstick). I'd drain out the existing G/box oil, and check the contents of the oil for any metal filings or obvious damage. I also think the drain plug is magnetic on one side, so check that for any bits of swarf which would be a sign of damage inside the box. Also look at the oil itself and see what colour it is. IIRC it should be bright red. Then put some fresh oil in there. To check the level, get the car up to operating temperature, then, with your foot on the brake, go through reverse, drive, 2,1. Then back up through to park again. It may take a while to select some gears while the oil works its way around the box, then after 3 to 4 cycles, with the engine still running and the G/box in N, get out and check the oil level on the dipstick. After you've got some new oil in there, see how things go.
