stevie_b
For sale: I've bought a new desktop computer and so my old one is for sale. It works absoutley fine. The only reason I upgraded is because I want to run some very RAM-hungry software (Virtual PC), and RAM is comparatively expensive to buy for older computers. This is an old PC, I won't pretend otherwise. However it works absolutely fine and runs Windows XP with MS Office etc easily. It would struggle with Windows 7 due to lack of RAM, but if you had access to cheap PC133 RAM it could easily be upgraded to run it. I would consider breaking it if there's no interest in the PC as a whole. If you want something in particular from it, make me an offer. The specs: Atlas Desktop PC in a beige tower case. There are no cracks, marks or other blemishes on the case. Motherboard: Asus A7V (http://www.dansdata.com/a7v.htm or http://active-hardware.com/english/reviews/mainboard/a7v.htm). Long in the tooth now, but this was one of the best boards around at the time, and it still works as it did when it left the factory. Processor: 1.3GHz Athlon Thunderbird. Never overclocked. RAM: 512MB PC133 in a single stick. The motherboard can take 3 of these, giving a maximum of 1.5GB of RAM. Hard drives: IBM 30GB 7200rpm, Maxtor 40GB 7200rpm 1 DVD-ROM drive (read-only, doesn't write to discs) 1 CD-RW drive (writes to CD-R and CD-RW discs, not DVDs) 1 floppy disk drive Graphics card: nVidia GeForce FX5200 128MB graphics card with analogue, digital and S-Video outputs. Other expansion cards (all PCI): Gigabit-capable ethernet card 4-port USB2.0 hub. The motherboard comes with 2 USB1.1 ports at the back, but I got tired of the slow transfer speeds so bought a internal hub to upgrade it. 56K internal modem Creative SoundBlaster 128 sound card with joystick port. Analogue TV tuner: I've never used this, but it came with the PC so I left it in. Included are a PS/2 keyboard and mouse. All you'd need to supply is a monitor and maybe some speakers. At the moment the hard drives are completely empty, but if there's any interest I could see about installing Windows XP. The bad points: 1) There is a RAM fault that shows up on Memtest86. However, I've never had a problem with it, and it doesn't interfere with the running of Windows. I've used this PC to run Windows XP Home for several years and it works absolutely fine, with no mysterious Blue Screen Of Death crashes. 2) The Maxtor hard disk has a bad sector near the beginning. I have got round this by leaving the first 1.5GB of space unformatted. 3) The case's cooling fan is a bit noisy when you first start the PC up. It quietens down after about 30 seconds. Price: £30, collection only from the Basingstoke area. I can take photos if there's any interest. All questions are welcome, either technical or non-technical. I'm happy to expand on or explain any of the things I've said.
Scott
Just FYI, I don't think this PC would run windows 7 bud. Pretty sure the chipset is too old along with the ram config etc. Good luck with the sale
stevie_b
Ahh, fair point Scott. I doubt whether I'll get any interest in this, but it seems such a shame to chuck it in a skip when it still works.
