clarky666
As the title says was wondering if anyone has got rid of their old car and taken advantage of the governments scrappage scheme yet ? I've search high and low on the internet without much joy. May sound a silly question but i was wondering how the old car is actually disposed of. Might sound daft but my understanding is that is needs to be taxed, MOT'd and owned for over a year by the current owner. I can't see anything saying it needs to be functioning. Can anyone confirm ? Reason i am asking is i was considering using my old MR2 in order to help my folks out a bit with a saving on their new car since they've always been good to me would be nice to give something back now i am a bit older. Only minor issue is the V5 would have to go in my name for the new motor initially as it has to match the details of the car traded in but thats not a big problem. Here is my theory though. Assuming all you need to do is have it registered, taxed, mot'd, etc and such like which it currently is. Would there be anything to stop me literally stripping it out of everything which has potential re-sale value as spares and leaving basically a shell to be scrapped? This might sound daft but it was a suggestion from a friend which i'd never given a second thought to till tonight. As i said i've looked around the net and couldn't see any direct answer? peter richards
not sure if im correct but the V5 might not be that important because its not going to have a new owner , go and check with a main dealer and see what they say. i used to take a few cars from one dealer every now and again , but if hes taken it on a scrapage deal it has to be scraped ,
Abz
I think the V5 part does matter mate, otherwise anyone would be buying Metro's for £50 & then putting it down for scrappage scheme. I believe the car does need to be running but condition does not matter. If you have interior bits & bobs missing, think that would be fine, as long as you don't stroll in with no dash board! I'd check with a local dealer & just say that you have 2 MR's and now one is sold you only got this one, you took a few bits off to fix the other MR & see if they would still take it as it will be scrapped anyway? MARTIN R
I also think the V5 is very important, it shows evidence of 12 months ownership
creativename
The V5 HAS to have been in your name for atleast 12 months. This is to do with Gordon Brown giving the dealer the 2k allowance. In theory all the car has to be able to do is "drive in under its own power".This really will depend on the dealer. When I was selling cars we used to remove whatever parts we needed, the company owner once removed a set of wheels from a scrappage car and just left if there....along came Mr Scrapman with his lorry and just lifted it on. As said it really does depend on how flexible the dealer is. The cars are literally crushed (well supposed to be) so in theory is shouldn't matter. clarky666
Yeah the V5 part i looked into as the small print says the scrapped car needs to be registered to the owner for a minimum of 12 months and also the new car has to be registered to the same person. I will see what the dealer says. The thinking was to literally rip out anything i could punt on to make a few extra quid and leave it with 4 wheels, steering wheel and an engine lol. Even considered taking off the t-bar panels and the passengers seat out as it's full leather and absolute mint but that might be pushing it a bit ! I'm being cynical thinking the dealer would just sell the scrap onto a breakers who would then make their money back on my parts! Or does it literally all just get thrown in the crusher intact. Thanks for advice anyway i'll let you know we progress. Cheers !

Smaller dealer might have more time & the place they send it to might have time to take some parts off. You could take some parts off which are not really needed. With regards to the leather seats I'd put it up for sale & the seller in return gives their own seats (no matter what condition they are!). creativename
All dealers will move them on ASAP. this is because without a certificate of distruction, they will not be paid the 2k allowance. I cannot see a dealer really giving a fcuk what state the car is in, aslong as the paper work is correct so they an get there money. I once saw an old mini that had, had the rear quarter chopped off in an attempt to be made a convertible, used as a scrappage car.
