CJ
I was going to change from XP to Windows 7 and have already downloaded the Microsoft Easy Transfer software to swap over my pics, music etc but I just realised that my genuine Office disk is back in the UK and so I wont be able to reload that. If I copied all the files from Office folder in the mydocs/programmes file and saved them on an ext HD, would I be able to run and install Office from that? stevie_b
I'm not sure that copying the Office files like that will work properly. It will work if (and only if) the installation files got copied to your hard disk when you installed Office: I don't think they do, but I may be wrong. T2 MSW
unfortunatly not, the install registers hundreds of dll's on the sytem and adds lots of information to the registry. Sorry reinstall only from the media.
CJ
Buggernuts! Thanks for the replies guys. I will now have to see if any friends can help with a disk. Is there a free alternative to Office out there?
T2 MSW
Yeah options are Open office or get yourself the disk via A.N. Other method
stevie_b
As M5W TT said, Sun's OpenOffice is good as long as you don't use the more advanced features of MS Office. Otherwise, OpenOffice can feel quirky sometimes (not worse, just different) compared to Office. If it were me, I'd see if anyone in the UK can lay their hands on your Office CD, make a copy and send you the copy.
T2 MSW
anyone used the google one??
The-Plethora
I switched over to open office a while back, very happy with it and seems to do everything I need. The only time it causes grief is if you have a word document with loads of autoshapes, text boxed and pictures and it can arrange stuff in daft places when you transfer to and from word or office writer. CJ
anyone used the google one?? I use google for the excel type docs and it works OK - not as good as a full Office excel program but OK for basic things.
Animal
I use OpenOffice for basic stuff and it's fine. If you have someone who could give you the serial numbers from your office disk, you could always download a copy of MS Office and use your original keys. That would be quicker than waiting for it to be posted out to you.

Does that work? I thought the Office CD (or whatever it comes on) had to be matched against a specific license key, but I've never tried that so might be wrong. Animal
As far as I know it should work. I know I've installed Windows 7 from the same disk on 2 machines using 2 legit reg keys. It's worth trying. If you try the legit keys on a downloaded copy and it works, great. If not, then it's just a matter of waiting for the original disks to be posted, or install OpenOffice. CJ
I am pretty sure that my local PC shop can help me out with the problem.
CJ
Well, I ended up using Open Office and I have to say I am pretty impressed with Windows 7 so far.
stevie_b
I've never used it but Windows 7 seems to have a good reputation already. It's kind of what Vista should have been had they not rushed it out.
Animal
Aye, I've had Windows 7 on my PC & Laptop for a while now and it's running great. Nice and clean & shiny and stable. Fast, too. My computers actually talk to each other now with no prompting, something which I found impossible using an XP destop to Vista Laptop. On install, it automatically found my modem/router and sorted everything out with minimal input from me. The Laptop was the same and it found my PC and set up the network with that straight away. CJ
Much the same here. The router was found and set up with no issue as was the printer and all the other ancillaries I use. I was very impressed with the Windows easy transfer system for the file transfer too but less impressed that i cannot find the report from the transfer to help me decide which other files need downloading. Has anyone else used the program and, if so, where did it hit the report?
