off to the job centre this morning to take part in the depressing, and frankly quite degrading, practice of signing on.

ive been in employment since i left school and have now become whats better known as a 'dole bum' :(

oh the joys of modern day economy.

Your only a dole bum if you have no intention of working and are going to live off the state.

Good luck on finding another job and dont put yourself in the same club ;)

What line of work are/were you in?

Construction.7 years bricklaying, supervising for 3.

The whole situation sucked as i had just finished my degree when the company announced the redundancies last year. if i had known sooner i could have applied for post grad positions else where. As it was by the time i found my job was at risk there werent any post grad positions still available anywhere.

ive noticed some companies are advertising post grad positions for 2010 already so spending most of this week phoning a lot of companies, sorting out my CV out and getting them sent off.

It's all about attitude you will be sorted before long. I read about someone who turned up to his weekly review or whatever you call it in trousers, shirt and tie. Unlike everyone else they didnt even ask to see evidence of the jobs he had been looking for :) must be something in appearance.

If you cant find something straight away (dont know your living / rent situation) its worth getting yourself in town and sighning up with a few job agencies, pamela neave for office stuff are good and travail (not sure if they will have a branch near you) are also worth checking out.

I was recruited to my current position through a job agency so its worth doing although you may not always get the greatest weekly assignments. God help you if you have to work for the organ donor register like I did, inputting all those cards for 2 weeks about what people will and wont donate when they die! Good luck

Right the trip to sign on today was as depressing as i expected. The woman spoke to me as if i was some loser so i politely pointed out to her how im in this situation and the qualifications i have and she suddenly changed her tone of voice and body language towards me. Still dont like her though.

She then went onto to say that she had booked me on a 'returning to work' course for the 2nd feb.Ii asked is there any chance of changing the date as its my birthday that day and i wont be here and she said 'its too late, you should have told me sooner!'....told her sooner? she only informed me like a minute ago as to when the date for the course was, which i didnt even know about!

Anyway todays trip really kicked me into gear when i got home and have searched like ive never searched before and have found 4 large construction companies with graduate positions currently available so have spent most of the afternoon (and most of tonight by the looks of it) filling in the online apllications.

Fingers crossed there may be light at the end of the tunnel after all!

I know exactly what you mean mate, was very recently in this situation, just graduated last year, applying for jobs. The jobcentre treat you like your useless, until you start telling them your qualifications. I remember when I went dressed in smart casual clothes as to how I was treated compared to jogging bottoms and a sweatshirt.

So don't worry about it and keep at it, you never know whats around the corner...and don't let them useless 'toss**s' at the jobcentre get to you. You do what you have to and something will turn up. ;)

I know what you mean, was sack about 5 months ago. Got this job a month ago, but I tell you what the type of people you see in the job centre has changed dramatically.

When I came out of university in 2004, I signed on to grab back some tax money while I looked for a job. I wouldn't say I dressed up each time, but I was smartly dressed. It did mean that the staff I spoke to treated me at least like a human.

However, everyone else was so SCUMMY - I mean really, really REALLY scummy. Now, however, there is a huge difference. People from all works of life, I mean the scum are still there, but they are now the minority.

I was originally signing on to a job centre in High Wycombe which was massively out of the way and every staffer there was arogant tw*t, or a spotty arogant tw*t. I moved to a different job centre and dealt with a guy who was actually half way decent. Put me on a few courses, suggested some good alternative career paths (looked into becoming a lecky/teacher) but lucky I found the good job I'm in at the moment.

I would say "Hang in there. Know that you've got right attitude and you're nothing like the blood sucking scum that call going-to-the-job centre a job."

Sorry to hear this Matthew, though I am pretty sure you will find a job soon. You are intelligent & from what I gather hardworking! Don't let this put a damper on your spirits dude! I'll have a word with a couple of friends & see if they have any advice or jobs going, though keep up with what you are doing.

Also I think Gaz1 is in the construction industry, not sure if it is worth PM'ing him?

I had to sign on for a week or two not so long ago and it's not a nice feeling, especially the first time I went, I stood out like a sore thumb as I wasn't dressed smart but I wasn't wearing tracksuit bottoms and a cap at a 45 degree angle, the worst bit is the fact that there were people who were in there that knew each other from signing on each week and listening to a guy claiming his disability allowence that he'd been on for several years for his knee.............he seemed to walk perfectly fine to me.
