ICE: Head units and mp3 player connectivity

The missus is thinking of buying a new head unit and mp3 player which can be controlled via the head unit.

I know that the iPod is very well supported for this, but is this the (only) way to go?

Is the iPod controlling interface available on other players? Or are there other interfaces?

I'm using a headunit that supports a USB memory stick which works brilliantly for me. You can scroll through the folders on the headunit display if you want a particular album/artist or just have it on random (which is what I usually do).

I've got a 16Gb memory stick, currently about 2/3s full and have it sync'ed to my PC so when I've had some new music, I just plug it in and it transfers all 4 & 5 star rated tracks from Media Player straight to the stick. No more messing about with cd's or playlists - all my favourite music is in the car ready to play.

Mine's probably the previous model to your's Matt, very similar looking and no SD card slot. Again, very good value for money, I think mine was about £125-£150 a few years ago.

It's not that much hassle, especially if you get a 16 or 32Gb stick as you can have practically all your music on there and forget about it.

If the newer model (Matt's) supports ipods, that could be worth looking at as it is a very versatile unit. I don't own any portable players (except my PSP) so can't comment.

Got this

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine-ida-x305.html

Gives full iPod control, playlists, cover art etc.

Can't fault it, probably find it cheaper else where, or get the one with the lower screen. Drilled a little hole in the centre console compartment and just plug my iPod in there and that's it, nice and tidy :)

At the moment, I think I am leaning towards a flash memory stick / sd card which can be left in the car.

Do you have any experience using the Alpine with a USB stick?

Afraid not. Found it quite pointless having 4/8/16Gb of music in my car when i can have 80-160Gb on a single iPod, then basically dock the iPod on my computer whenever I get new music and that's it.

Was looking into the SD cards and ones with build in HDD units which ripped your music to them, but why bother? Have a mp3 player connected and have all your music for whatever takes your mood. Then you've also got an MP3 player to use when you're out of the car on holiday etc.

I suppose it doesn't help that I have about 900 albums at home I've bought over the years. If you haven't got a huge music collection or possibly stereo ADHD like I do :) then SD card may be the way to go...

I have this one and recommend it for the same reasons.
