My new car.....

On Saturday, straight after departing with my gorgeous Supra at Gatwick, where she was driven to France by her new owners. I went on to Harrow, to view a nice FD3S RX-7 Type R.

It's not in showroom condition in terms of paintwork, however it has had one owner since import in 2005, loads of receipts and service history, including a full rebuild in 2005 at 66,000 miles, (13,000 miles ago) Oil changes every 3000 miles, sensible tuning modifications, mapped by RE:WORX, recon gearbox etc etc. So I think I got a good one :D

I was very, very skeptical about buying an RX-7, you hear bad things about them all the time, but as long as it is always well maintained, never put your foot down until it's warmed up properly and buy one with either very low miles or a recent rebuild that was done properly, they're really nice cars!

Driving back last night was a totally different driving experience to a Supra, although I have never owned or driven a TT manual Supra, the power delivery on the RX, is completely different, it doesn't feel smooth, strong and safe like my Supra's always did, even when you put your foot down, the Supra is smooth, however the RX is like a mental little go-kart, handles differently (better IMO) no turbo lag, it just goes, it's very bumpy and a bit creaky and the suspension is hard, and you're almost sitting on the floor, and it weighs next to nothing, but my god it's fun! I can only imagine what a sinlge turbo RX would be like... :eyebrows: I never thought I'd say this, but it's more fun to drive than either of my TT BPU Supra's... It feels raw, the Supra always feels so luxurious, where as the RX, spitting flames out the exhaust, making my head hurt it was so loud, was just awesome :D

Here's the spec

Engine:

Recent compression test with low 8’s

Magnecor 10mm ignition leads

PWR aluminium radiator

Walbro high-flow fuel pump

FSE fuel pressure regulator

HKS hard intercooler pipes

Lightweight underdrive pulleys

Aircon and airpump removed

Battery relocated to boot

K&N panel filter

Apexi ecu and commander mapped by RE:WORX

Suspension:

Fully polybushed including the steering rack

Tein Coilovers

Interior:

Momo commando steering wheel

Re Amemiya steering cowl boost gauge

Black leather seats, rear seats and roof lining

3 x Auto Gauges, Oil pressure, Oil Temp and water temp

Exterior:

Re Amemiya door mirrors

Mazda side skirts and rear spats

Tinted windows

Smoked lights all round

Xenon headlights

Racing Beat split rim alloys with Avon ZZ3 tyres 235/40 F and 255/40 R 17’s

Weight:

1250kg (standard weight 1280kg)

Power:

Dyno’d at RE:WORX 325.5bhp at the flywheel (standard 255bhp) 269.4bhp at the wheels at 0.8 bar

Got a few things in mind for it already, but top of the list is new tyres, although the Avon's have tread, they're crap :D, full service, respray of the bonnet and doors (covered in stone chips) maybe a new Nur Spec exhaust as the one on there is just crazy loud, some flush C-West headlights, 99 spec front, or Burnout front and maybe remove the pointless rear seats to lose some weight. Then uprate the brakes.... and so on :D

Some pictures taken today after a good clean and polish. Shame about the crap location, I'll get some good ones next week.

:) Nice

Thanks :)

Very nice, I have always wanted one of these

Buy one ;)

Stunnig :)

What Camera - And what objectives ?:)

Objectives? Do you mean which settings? It's a Nikon D40X.

Nice lookin Rex. I'd slap a massive spoiler on the back :) Would love to get a red one with a nice big V8 in it at some point myself.

Lol, not sure if it would suit a big wing, as it would have to have a body kit to match?

Very nice, always fancied one myself:cool:

Seriously, get one :D Have you driven one before?

On average how much do they normally sell for?

For a decent pre facelift like mine, with recent rebuild and warranty, around 6 - 10k. (more if highly tuned) For a single turbo, could be anything from 6k++ depending on mods etc. The facelifts are apparently the ones to go for though, but hard to find, and start at 7k or more and go up. Anything priced below 4k needs a rebuild now, shortly, or has no proof of one.

I'd only ever buy one from a reputable importer who would offer a warranty on the engine, a reputable Rotary specialist with warranty or a well looked after enthusiast car like mine with recent rebuild by a decent RX-7 specialist. Also have a compression test done before buying to make sure.

I always fancied one of these and the one you've bought looks the dogs. Sadly, being a tad over 10 stone, I might struggle to fit inside one in comfort. ;)

:D They're not as small as they look once you're in. It's getting out that's the problem!

Not too bad. I suppose budgeting £2k+ for a rebuild you'd be guaranteed a decent engine'd car for the £6k - £8k quoted.

Some rebuilds will cost a lot more than others, depending on the reason for the rebuild. A basic rebuild isn't too bad. If I still own mine when it comes to it (maybe 60k down the line if well maintained) then I'd have it

at the same time which adds on a fair bit.

If I didn't buy the one I did today, I would've gone on to view this one which is an absolute bargain, 2 year warranty on a freshly rebuilt and Bridgeported engine, plus he'd take 5k for it!

Congrats on your new car! Nice little write up and glad to hear you are happy with it, certainly looks good on the pictures. Hope you stick around on the Supra forum though! :)

Thanks :) I will do, I'm on the MRC forum however it's not that active compared to here, guess there just isn't many RX-7's!

I saw that one, I'm pretty sure it's sold though, was a good deal, considering he just bought it from Jurgen for a fair bit more I think!

I meant to add, stunning car you've bought. I've never considered owning one but that does get you thinking. Aren't they notoriously bad on fuel?

Nice car. Good that you're just around the corner of one of the best RX tuners too :)

If you need work done, Super 7 would be a great choice. I've been there, seen their outfit and driven cars built by them and I've not been disappointed. Jason knows a thing or two about rotaries.

Well I only do up to 4000 miles a year, and it's only a weekend toy, so it wouldn't be too much of an issue for me. A single turbo RX is supposed to be a lot better on fuel. I can't really judge as I've only driven it from Harrow to home, which is 80 miles approx, I put in £30 (half a tank) in Harrow when it was nearly empty, and I have just under quarter tank left, so not a noticeable difference from the Supra tbh.

Me too, pity they're so small inside!

Enjoy it SG. :)

You're not lying there! They are seriously small.

It's not that bad tbh, the Supra just feels bigger as it's taller and wider inside, but leg room I can't notice a difference, just have difficulties in getting out as it's so low!

I know all about Super-7 :D I'll be booking the car in on Monday for various works :)
