Tannhauser
What a horrible idea. We've been perfectly able to understand sarcasm and irony in written communication for centuries, and all without the need of a little symbol. Take this example from Njal's Saga, written around a thousand years ago: After climbing onto Gunnar's roof to establish whether Gunnar is at home, Thorgrim is stabbed through the thatch. He makes it back to Gizur, the leader of the attackers: Gizur looked up at him and asked, "Is Gunnar at home?" "That's for you to find out," replied Thorgrim. "But I know that his halberd certainly is." And with that he fell dead So the e-version would come with a little symbol after Thorgrim's words, just to point out that really he did know Gunnar was at home. It could ONLY be an American invention: the same country that brought us the - thankfully vanishing - habit of saying 'NOT!' after any ironic statement. Reading probably isn't a good choice of activity for anyone who needs a little symbol to point out every bit of ironic intent. They would be better off watching irony-free cackathons like Independence Day, or working on discovering fire.
