Meko
yep, for every scammer sending spam emails there's at least 10 people dumb enough to do what they ask. People still fall for the Nigerian scams Postman Prat
scotty71
There are people out there who will reply to fake emails for banking institutions and ebay/paypal etc. Spam mail and fakesters have been round long enough for people to get educated on the issues. If people reply to such mails they shouldnt be let loose on a PC in my opinion;) Scotty
peter richards
well the HM ones are probably due to the tax self assesment having to be in by the 31st , and the bank ones are just hit and miss , i get a few from banks i dont even use. ive got a spam folder set up but it doesnt catch much tbh , these systems that you pay for are they any good are they werth the money ? Meko
Whilst I feel incredibly sorry for the chap, I cannot believe how naive he was. i can't feel sorry for him.. All he had to do was look at her picture and realise it's a scam; she's pretty fit and he looks like he lives in a bin. To fall for that, fair enough... but to then hand over 30k to somebody else on 'FBI' agents??

ivan
Out of curiosity, I went into my email account via the web and turned off the spam filter for a while. Wow - what a difference - NTL (Virgin) are trapping about 50 or so spam emails a day in each account! I still get one or two slip through but thank goodness they're filtering first. peter richards
ah im with virgin media , how did you set up the filter if you dont mind me asking
ivan
It'll probably already be set Peter, but you need to login to your email account at the Virgin website: http://www.virginmedia.com/account/sign-in.php?bounceto=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.virginmedia.com%2Ffiles%2Fntl%2Fredir.php%3Fto%3Dwebmail Then look under the Settings tab for the Spam Mail settings. The settings I get are Don't filter spam Delete incoming spam Place in Spam folder Deliver to inbox labelled as Spam
Abz
Peter, also do not open the e-mails. If you don't recognise the recipient or the subject header looks odd then send it to junk or delete it. What these scammers do is put a read receipt & also check if the e-mail address are valid by sending a delivery receipt. When you open the e-mail, it sends the scammer a notification to advise this mailbox is live & someone does read the e-mails. They then sell on your e-mail address as a live account, this is how you get an increase of spam e-mails. Hope this helps Peter
