Whitesupraboy2
Im sure ive read the info on this before and I just cant find it. Issue: logon to PC in one profile and wireless works (internet) switch user by logging on as another user and the internet stops working. wifi still connected. Ping shows this by trying to ping google.com Anyone come across this?
Abz
Never come across this myself, few questions for you... The profile which the internet does not work, is it the same user level? i.e not a locked down account? Have you tried clearing internet cookie files, temp files etc? Whitesupraboy2
Both Local Admins and 2nd profile is brand new. I created it....it is very weird!
Abz
Yes very odd! What type of machine is this? i.e laptop/desktop? Have you tried the same thing wired into the router? Checked device manager?
Branners
Is this a PC or laptop you are talking about? If it is a PC then you are probably using a wireless USB adapter. I would go in to the non-working profile and install the USB software again and see if that helps. My machine at home is the same, the wifi would not work in the second profile and so I had to do the above.
Whitesupraboy2
Ok cheers Branners, yes its a PC with a dongle. I cant use the ethernet port as directly connected to another PC for some software. Its probably one of the worst setups ive had to try and fix. to put it in perspective....wireless router is a whole 5 inchs from the tower....yet its still wireless because the ethernet port is in use. Abz - device shows fine in device manager...whole thing is weird!!
MrRalphMan
Do you not have a free slot to put a Nic Card in? I have a couple of half hight cards here if you want one.
Branners
if the wireless router is that close can you not just plug the 2 computers in tot he wireless router using it as a hub and then each PC should still be able to talk to the other. When you are in the working profile go to a command prompt and type IPconfig and see what results come back, then do the same in the not working profile and see if it has somehow picked up a wrong IP address, gateway or DNS server. MrRalphMan
Depending on the IP configuration of the 'other' device, you might need to add static routes to it via the Router..

Done all that, IP addresses look fine still, its very weird. The connection direct between the 2 PC's does not have a gateway specified anyway as its given a fixed IP address. Essentially the 2 pcs are linked for some sort of software, directly, then the internet for this PC hence the USB wireless dongle, think simplest will be a 2nd network card, that should resolve the problem if reinstalling the driver in the other profile doesnt. I dont think static routes are needed as only 1 gateway specified and it works all fine in one profile and doesnt in the other. However have now found if i disconnect the wireless when in the 2nd profile and reconnect it, it then works correctly!!
Branners
hmm, any firewall software installed on the computer? Each profile would have its own firewall settings, so turn off the firewall for a moment in the bad profile and see if that helps.
MrRalphMan
With the fixed IP address, have you excluded this from the Routers DHCP pool? Maybe it's getting confused with an IP address already allocated in the range that it doles out?
Branners
it's not trying to use the internet connection from the other machine is it? perhaps try a tracert and see what route it takes in the good profile and the bad one.
