Charlotte
Well, I'm always a fan of taking the boys/missus to Laserquest. It's indoors, it's affordable and it's the only time where you can legitimately take pleasure in shooting children. OMG I lurrrrve laserquest!! Especially when you get one of the very hairy geeky men taking it really seriously and you creep up behind them and shoot. We went and played glow in the dark crazy golf, it was acesome and a little bit scary.
Animal
We're NT members and do the random weekend trips quite a bit. We'll either pick a specific spot or just a part of the country then look to see what else is around and work out a general route and just bimble around. It's quite cool to just drive around semi-randomly and drop in to various places. Tourist Information is usually pretty good for finding cheap, decent b&b's. We've had some excellent little breaks that haven't cost very much at all. This time of year is a bit short on things to do, but there are still plenty of historic houses, museums and whatnot to mooch around. Either that, or stay in bed, stick some films on and be lazy for a weekend.

stevie_b
Good call on the National Trust suggestion. Also English Heritage might be worth considering, although their properties are usually older, more rugged/ruined and hence more exposed to the elements. Great for summer, not so great for winter. Snooze
Good call on the National Trust suggestion. Have to agree - if you like houses, gardens, country parks, etc. NT membership is a bit of a no-brainer - it pays for itself within just 3 or 4 days out. Canons Ashby House is a nice one near Northampton, and down near Buckingham, there's a good selection: Stowe Gardens, Claydon House, Ascott, Upton House and the fantastic Waddesdon Manor amongst others. The gardens at Wrest Park (an EH property) in Bedfordshire are really nice too (probably better in the Summer, tho!).
