edd_t
As I'm sadly leaving my 20's and moving onto my 30's in a few weeks time (everybody say ahhhhhh) my GF as an extra special birthday pressie is taking me to Dublin for 4 nights (shes already bought me a new mountain bike, Rockhopper SL 2010 if anyone is intrested)... So far I really dont know much about what we are doing in Dublin, it was all supposed to be a surprise, but some ex-friends ruined that for me nevermind. I know we are going to the Guiness Factory, checking out a Zoo and also going on a Ghost tour at night. But shes asked me to look into other things to do. So, anyone got any funky ideas? Good places to visit, attractions, nice restaurants etc etc...
Mike
That must be a popular destination for 30th birthdays Charlotte took me there for mine My advice would be have a few pints of Guinness around the (admittedly quite touristy) Temple Bar area... *lots* of live music there and never short of a sing-a-long somewhere It's an amazing place.. I felt more chilled after spending an hour there than I have on any beach holiday.. The people there are so nice and friendly.. it's just an amazing city Enjoy! Mike
We saw U2's manager (Paul McGuinness) in The Clarence Hotel (which I think Bono and The Edge own) trying to get two young girls to some party he was going to... we were ear wigging and apparently The Edge was going to be there We later found him lying on the floor outside a pub in Temple Bar (clearly with a few too many beers inside him) singing his heart out! caseys
Try and stay in the Morrison hotel near the river, it's absolutely grand, we got a suite for 4 days and it was looovely If not at least go in there for a cocktail or two. http://www.morrisonhotel.ie/ Check out the Mongolian BBQ restaurant for dinner or lunch one time http://www.mongolianbbq.ie/ Kilmainham Jail is well worth a visit too http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/Ireland/County_Dublin/Dublin-296021/Things_To_Do-Dublin-Kilmainham_Jail-BR-1.html Trinity College is sort of museum-esq but interesting, including the Book of Kels The zoo did look good but weather was foul when I went so we didn't do that I would advise getting a 48 hour tour bus pass as you can get it to go round all the sights inc the Guiness factory, jail, zoo and college Elephant and Castle place does good brekkies If you love Thai food I'd go to Saba http://sabadublin.com/ Whiskey + chocolate cocktail was quite interesting and the food was daaaaamn good. Oh and if you like Whiskey of course go to the Old Jameson distillery Oh and everything will be quite pricy in dublin, especially with the exchange rate at the moment

supramkivcork
Not from Dublin myself mate, but the Temple Bar area is the equivalent of say "Times Square" of NY or whatever built up touristy area you can think of. I dont want to put you off the area either it's just not really a true reflection of Dublin. It's mostly stags/hens etc. You should fire "Clodola" on here a pm. He's living in Dublin so could probably give you some better advice as regards eating and where to head out for booze .
pedrosixfour
I'd recommend the ferry to Holyhead
Charlotte
But not up the old chimney next to the distillery - well not in the wind anyway - especially when the guide stops in the lift at the top whilst explaining why it's so windy. We did a tour on a 'viking' boat which took us to a docklands area and into the water for a short tour, quite interesting but if you go to Fitzwilliam square there are tours around the city all the time. Avoid scary mental leaf blowers, you have been warned! Also there is a restaurant in Temple bar area which Sinead O'Connor used to waitress at - Bad Ass Cafe, they do great pizza (or did circa 2004) and they have a pulley system thing to serve people with. There is a house which I forget the name of but it is 'done out' like it would have been in the past - quite interesting if you enjoy history - it's like 'number 61' or something, I'm helpful I know. Oh - and I went on the dublin tourism website and got some cards which got us into places for free. It probably worked out more expensive because I got a week's worth but I think you can get a three day pass, especially if you're doing the zoo and stuff too. Have a blast it's ace.
