Anyone fitted a induction kit to a J-Spec N/A

Hi I want to fit an induction kit to my 93 J-spec N/a.

 

What sort of problems will I encounter?

 

I am looking at an Injen, but the instructions and diagram show that there is an air mass meter to be fitted within the pipework, where is the Supra's and what happens if I do not have this item within the pipework, from what I can see there is some meters on the throttle body....

 

Your help is appreciated.

Dazsir,

fitted one to mine (apexi) and noticed a difference bottom end.

Not much difference above 50mph upwards though.

 

Well worth doing.

Cheap mod.

 

Make sure you refit the 'fuel management' sensor that sits

in the main funnel from the new air intake. (it hangs on a cable

just on the left hand side of the engine bay as you look from

the front of the car). Drill a hole and seal with silicon to make it airtight.

Thanks for the swift reply, bit unsure of the fuel management system, the only sensor I moved out was on the right hand side of the engine bay as you look at the car, it was pushed in the plastic intake (stock) about half way in, presumed it was a temp sensor to measure the air???

 

Would that be specific to turbo Supras? Mine is a N/A.

 

Your advice would be appreciated....

I just drilled a couple of holes and pushed the sensors in, can just make it out in this pic.

Reset the ECU and that was it.

 

Then I put the stock back on with a toms panel which is far better IMO

1. Loss of power due to engine sucking up hot air from engine bay.

2. Poor filtration = more engine wear.

3. Noise...

No you don't.

Don't do it Daz. This has been gone over many times. The first mod I made to my car was to remove the HKS induction kit and refit the stock airbox. The car runs so much better now.

Pants! why do people always recommend having an induction kit, the one I have got my hands on is an Ingen technology which has a heat shield.

 

What other mods can I do with reasonable amount of money to improve my performance?

 

There was a sensor in the stock airbox, am I right in thinking this is the MAF sensor, if it is what does it do?

This is changing, the stock airbox has a cold air intake which is better and the filter will provide much better filtration than one you would get with an induction kit.

The people who recommend them are 'usually' the people who are selling them, mmmm.... wonder why that would be??

 

I would suggest sticking it on ebay and sell it to some chav to make his Saxo go quicker ;)

 

There is not a lot you can do to an NA to get a lot more performance out of it, removing the cats and fitting an after market exhaust will have some benefit, but don't go expecting big gains for your money. There are a few members running NOS, this will give good hp gains but it is not cheap to use on a regular basis.

I would say ditch the ingen as i have a fully fabricated stainless steel kit with an apexi on the end and its now been tested on dyno and with standard box in and a better panel filter youll see a better bhp gain.

 

Iv also just had nos fitted and its AWSOME.......

The sensor is the MAT sensor (manifold air temperature). If you take it out of the airflow it will be sensing underbonnet temps (which will be higher), but since with out the airbox gone that is what you are sucking in, it shouldn't make any difference.

Nic,

I thought a replacement induction kit didn't do anything for those with TT's but was OK for us NA's! Is that not so?

 

It doesn't matter if it is an NA or a TT, both engines should run better and make more power if they are sucking up cool air, as oppossed to hot air from the engine bay. Cool air is more dense which = more oxygen which = bigger bang which = more power.

 

You've also got the same filtration issues whether it is an NA or TT, any small particles getting past the filter are going to wear the engine internals.

 

I've noticed a difference bottom end, as I've told Daz, now I'm confused!
