From where he was sat I doubt he'd have been able to see any fire.

FWIW, I think it was a weak excuse...

Very disappointing to see both Williams' bent esp after such a strong start.

According to Rubens the handling was going "off" from the pitstop so I think something went wrong then and got progressively worse until failure.

I'm not sure what MGP are going to appeal though. The rule says you can't overtake on the last lap if it has been led by a safety car, so what are they going to say in Paris?

"but it's just not fair - he's Michael Schumacher!"?

Yeah, it's not like they're Ferrari is it?

From the Formula 1 Website

Lewis Hamilton drew first blood in the opening practice session for the Turkish Grand Prix on Friday, when he lapped a second faster than McLaren team mate Jenson Button. The 2008 champion circulated in 1m 29.672s to set the pace initially before Button responded with 1m 29.623s. The 2009 champion later trimmed that to 1m 29.615s, but Hamilton’s 1m 28.653s was the decider.

Behind the silver arrows came two more, as Michael Schumacher just pipped Mercedes GP team mate Nico Rosberg for third with 1m 29.750s to 1m 29.855s. Sebastian Vettel was close to them in his new Red Bull chassis, with 1m 29.867s, and then came the very closely matched Renaults of Robert Kubica and Vitaly Petrov in 1m 30.061s and 1m 30.065s respectively. Mark Webber was right behind them with 1m 30.097s in the second Red Bull, and Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso on 1m 30.294s and Force India’s Adrian Sutil on 1m 30.501s completed the top 10.

Behind them, Kamui Kobayashi squeezed 1m 30.615s out of his BMW Sauber, which was going much better on a flowing track than it had in Monaco, then came Vitantonio Liuzzi on 1m 30.853s in the second Force India and Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari on 1m 30.867s.

Force India, like Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes, were experimenting with their version of the F-duct; in the case of the Silverstone-based team it’s called the SRW (switchable rear wing).

Sebastien Buemi was 14th for Toro Rosso on 1m 31.011s, ahead of BMW Sauber’s Pedro de la Rosa on 1m 31.238s, the Williams of Nico Hulkenberg and Rubens Barrichello on 1m 31.355s and 1m 31.464s, and Jaime Alguersuari in the second Toro Rosso on 1m 31.735s.

Lotus were far and away the fastest new team and are beginning to make serious inroads into the gap between them and the established midfield runners. Heikki Kovalainen was again on strong form for 1m 32.161s, ahead of team mate Jarno Trulli on 1m 32.990s. Then there was a big gap to Karun Chandhok’s HRT. The Indian did one lap with the Cosworth engine apparently in idle mode before lapping in 1m 34.876s, comfortably ahead of Lucas di Grassi in the leading Virgin; the Brazilian lapped in 1m 35.137s. Team mate Timo Glock was 23rd on 1m 35.583s, and HRT reserve Sakon Yamamoto brought up the rear with a respectable 1m 36.137s on his first outing for the team. Bruno Senna will take over the car again this afternoon.

The track was dirtier initially than in previous years, and it wasn’t until close to the end of the first hour that Hamilton really got going to set the pace. That meant there were several moments and the slippery surface caught people out, among them Kubica, Petrov and Chandhok in Turn One, Sutil and Buemi in Turn Three, Schumacher in Turn Eight and Chandhok in Turn 12.

Eventually, Sutil lost it comprehensively in Turn Eight, seriously damaging the front of his Force India.

Session 2

Jenson Button turned the tables on McLaren team mate Lewis Hamilton on Friday afternoon when, despite a bobble in Turn Eight on his best lap, he set the fastest time with 1m 28.280s. This time, however, the Red Bulls of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel separated the silver cars.

The Australian lapped in 1m 28.378s, the German 1m 28.590s. Both had problems, however. Vettel reported loss of water pressure at one stage, and Webber stopped with five minutes to go with smoke emanating from the rear of his RB6.

Behind them, Hamilton was fourth on 1m 28.672s from Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso on 1m 28.725s, and the Mercedes duo of Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher on 1m 28.914s and 1m 28.974s respectively.

Robert Kubica took eighth for Renault with 1m 29.225s, with team mate Vitaly Petrov again impressing with 1m 29.501s for ninth. An unhappy Felipe Massa completed the top 10 for Ferrari. The Brazilian twice went off road in Turn Eight; on the second occasion he got sideways and seriously flat-spotted his only set of soft tyres, so was unable to improve upon 1m 29.620s.

After his gaffe this morning Adrian Sutil responded with a strong lap of 1m 29.629s in the lead Force India, while Nico Hulkenberg improved to 1m 29.987s once a hydraulic issue had been solved on his Williams.

Kamui Kobayashi and Pedro de la Rosa were evenly matched in their BMW Saubers, taking 13th and 14th with 1m 30.053s and 1m 30.176s respectively, ahead of Sebastien Buemi in the second Toro Rosso on 1m 30.386s, Vitantonio Liuzzi in the second Force India on 1m 30.627s, Rubens Barrichello in the second Williams on 1m 30.766s and Jaime Alguersuari in the second Toro Rosso on 1m 30.933s.

Heikki Kovalainen was again comfortably the best of the new team runners with 1m 31.610s in his Lotus, but Virgin had a better handle on things with Lucas di Grassi on 1m 33.013s ahead of the second Lotus of Jarno Trulli, who had problems with third gear on his way to 1m 33.081s. Timo Glock was 22nd in his Virgin on 1m 33.312s, then came the HRTs of Bruno Senna and Karun Chandhok on 1m 33.420s and 1m 33.740 respectively.

Besides Massa, Kobayashi was a spinner, early on in Turn Eight, where Liuzzi also ran wide. Senna went off three times in Turn One and once in Turn Five, Schumacher got Turn One wrong, and Chandhok was off the road in Turns Three and 12.

I see Tony is loitering.

Tony,

To me the revs of Vettels cars sounded like he'd backed off as he past Webber then booted it again. Did you catch that? I'm wondering if Webber had a fault or missed a gear. Thoughts?

Good result for McLaren. Hamilton deserves the win for keeping the Red Bulls honest earlier in the race.

Well done mclaren, I was jumping out my chair chearing with excitment when the redbulls came together.

Its good to see the mclaren cars have picked up some pace.
