Is a tiptronic classed as an Auto?

I was working with someone today who wants to buy a new car, but she only has an Automatic Licence..

So in order to suggest anything...I would need to know if she is allowed to drive aTiptronic or a manual selectronic gearbox.

What is classed as an auto 'auto clutch' or 'auto gears' no-one seems to know the answer.

From a licensing point of view, I've always understood that if the car has 2 pedals, AND a way of fully automating the gear changes, it's an auto, 3 pedals and it won't change unless you tell it to, its a manual.

Fancy gadgets like tiptronic paddles or buttons don't make any difference. Its the ability to start without manually using a clutch, and change gear without any driver input that makes it automatic

The tiptronic is a proper auto box, exactly the same as the previous generations of non tiptronic.. it is the ECU that makes it tiptronic as it sends the signals to change the gears anyway..

It is actually possible to convert a standard auto into tiptronic with a few little bits of electronics and I know this has been done before.

Oooh, how how?!!! I wonder if anyone's converted an auto into a tiptronic with proper F1 style paddles, rather than the up / down buttons on the normal Supra tiptronic. :eyebrows:

I remember seeing someone in australia who has posted it on the net, however by all accounts he is not around anymore..

I will see if I can dig out the link somewhere...

Convertng to paddles is actually a very simple procedure if you already have got tiptronic, since it is merely moving some wiring over onto the new buttons.

The SMART that my dad has isn't really an auto.

There's no clutch, and it does change gear for you if you don't do it, but only when it hits the redline!!!!! So it'll flash away on the dash telling you to change gear, and then waits till 6000 revs before changing for you!!!

Excellent thanks for your help...cool idea with the Tiptronic Paddle Shift Conversion, I was thinking about Tiptronic at one point the only thing that put me off was that it 'didn't' have the F1 style paddle shift...but if you can convert then thats obviously..

...Way To go.

It depends what's on the V5.

Supra tiptronic = auto

BMW SMG = manual, despite only having 2 pedals and a full-auto mode.

Weird.

This is what i mean....There seems to be a lot of confusion as to wether some of these Sequential gearboxes are legally classed as Auto or Manual...

Aparently the Ferrari F1 gearbox is legally classed as an Auto lol so whats the difference with the SMG :innocent:

This is what Confuses her...though doubt shes got the money for a Ferrari or an M3..but I know she is interested in a Tiptronic Golf or small Merc A Class which has a normal gearstick but an auto clutch...so shes confused!

I'm virtually 100% sure that if you have to move a gearstick to change gears, whether the clutch is automatic or not, then that car is classed as a manual.

If, however there is a position on the gearshift, where the car takes complete control of gear selection, then it's an automatic.

Automatics with manual overide,(like the tiptronic Supra) are just that, automatics
