Need4Speed
I've got a miss that is like having a pit-lane speed limiter. The car is undriveable. Could this be a failure or open circuit of the HKS FCD. Happy New Year all.
JSeaman
Have you got any reason to think the FCD is the cause? Obviously any wiring to the ECU has potential to cause issues but unless you wired this and then found the misfire I wouldn't necessarily suspect it. You could take a look at the wiring to see if anything is obviously wrong Have you checked the plugs and leads? Do you have known good parts you can swap or know someone local who would assist? Coil packs would be worth trying too. Was this a sudden event or has it gotten worse? Did you do any work on the car prior to it? Are any warning lights or error codes present? Sorry if I'm telling you what you already know but if you pop the plug out and then ground the bottom electrode on something metal in the engine bay then you can easily check for a spark on each cylinder, might help narrow things down for you
Need4Speed
No fault code is showing. The fault just appeared at the time I took out some redundant wiring (yes it really was redundant) and some of it passed near the main ECU. It's got an HKS FCD installed there hence the question. I can't see anything obviously not connected and obviously the FCD is not a factory connected item. It's the lack of fault code that surprises me. It's not just missing on a cylinder or two but I will try the old fashioned checks!
JSeaman
OK well the removal of the wiring has to be the #1 suspect then. It could be unrelated but unlikely. What was it you removed? People do some silly things with wiring so although it could have appeared to be harmless you never know!! Although the wiring itself MAY not have been the problem, you could easily disturb something else. Let us know what you find with your investigations, good luck
Nic
I'd try bypassing/removing the FCD and see if it solves the problem. Is it missing all the time, at certain rpm/boost/speed, etc?
Need4Speed
Nic, it misses all the time. It won't go faster than about 20km/h... it's that bad. The wiring I took out was all old stereo stuff and every wire I removed was not connected to anything at one or both ends. However I suspect that something has been disturbed/dragged/pulled. I'm confident of finding it but was hoping for a reply that would save me a load of unnecessary work. It's winter and my garage has no heating yet! JSeaman
How is the turbo timer wired into the ECU? Is it soldered, scotch locked, block connectors etc??
Need4Speed
How is the turbo timer wired into the ECU? Is it soldered, scotch locked, block connectors etc??I guess you mean the FCD? There's a scotchlok or two in there... exactly... That's why I thought it a likely cause. I'm going to rewire it properly.
JSeaman
Sorry, yes, thinking about other things Definitely worth whacking them all out and checking the status of the wires, if that makes no difference then start fault finding before you wire it back in. Good luck with the fault finding
Need4Speed
I finally got back to this problem after a big red herring with the immobiliser. I was looking under the bonnet with the ignition on and a multimeter in my hand when a coil-pack caught fire. All is now fixed.
JSeaman
That'll do it! Glad you're back on the road
