Noob question about iPod/iPhone and music

Jake

Recommended Posts

Bare with me, I know very little about these new fangled iPhone/iPod jobbies.

1, Can I import a (retail) CD from my collection onto an (unmodified) iPhone without having to pay Apple something for the privilege ?

2, Same question but for downloaded mp3 files instead of CDs

thanks.

So it only expects you to pay for music that you have downloaded from them (Apple) ?

The other day I tried to change my iPhone ringtone to a mp3 of The Sopranos theme tune that I've got, when I did the "convert to ringtone" thing in iTune it said I had to pay a charge to continue. I googled and found a way around it but it was a bit of a balls-ache for a 30sec ring tone.

As long as importing bulk mp3 files isn't like that I'm happy I guess.

Nah it's easy as pie mate, and there are no contributions for doing it. Like you guessed, you only have to pay for music that you take off of the itunes store itself.
Cool. Thanks Dave.

It's a kinda 'Think Different', and you'll get there. :)

Huh?

Along Jake's line of thinking, I cannot rip music from a newly bought cd to my Samsung Jet. Newly downloaded from Amazon is no problem.

This also happens to 3 other people I know. Anyone know what's going on?

Files are ripped to WMP then to the phone via the phones software or directly from My Computer to the phone as a drive. Nothing works. :(

Drag and drop MP3s into iTunes should do it. Depending how many you have you'll spend a fair amount of time renumbering tracks, finding album covers (discogs.org is great for this) and renaming tracks to the correct names.

You then have a choice of converting the MP3 to AAC if you want to keep everything uniform. You can get slightly smaller file sizes, but it's not worth it IMHO. Converting lossy compression to another lossy compression isn't a great idea for quality either.

Have you figured out Playlists yet? They're very handy for doing things like specifying a bunch of tracks up to the size of your device so you can quickly sync the Playlist rather than having to manually select tracks at sync time.

Podcasts are good when you get used to those too - I recommend the Friday Night Comedy Podcast from the BBC.
