MrRalphMan
Thanx so much guys. We cut the top of the box so it was totaly upright in the jeep. I drove all the way home @ 45mph!! Got home and now its all good. Well well chuffed good start to the year!! My only issue now is i cant get the surround sound to work unless im playing a dvd. I bought the extra red/white cable to hook it up to the tv so i could get the sound watchin sky but the speakers arent working Excellent news, I just hope you don't live in a 20 limit.. Red/White phone leads? How many are there as you don't normally get surround through these types of leads.
nevins
For the true surround sound I would suggest that you get a optic audio lead, they cost around £40, but once thats in, if you select digital input on the SS then what ever is on the screen will come through the SS

Jamesy
Erm, well it was a heavy duty lead with a red and white plug connection on both ends. Cost £30 and thr bloke said plug it into tv at the back, and the red/white holes on back of dvd and u 'will' get ss when watching dvds and sky!! MrRalphMan
hmm.. Might not be phono's then.. Either a pic of the model off the packaging might help.
AndrewOW
Audio line out of tv (rather than dvd player) to recommended line in of the surround sound. Glad you got it sorted so easily.

MrRalphMan
Do the connectors look a little like here? If so then you've been sold the wrong cable. What kits do you have? DVD Sky + or HD? Surround Sound System? Paul.

Surround Sound System? Paul. I would say it's a racing cert he has been sold phono plug cables. I use them on my system by taking them direct from audio out on the DVD to the audio in on the surround sound (no other connections on it) and use a HDMI cable to the TV. Mind you, £30 sounds a hell of a lot for phono cables!
JustGav
All depends on the salesman's definition of surround sound. SS can be pro logic which simply used the red+white (Right and left RCA connectors), more modern SS uses discrete digital channels and requires optical or coax (or about 8 RCA connectors if you do it the hard way)
Jamesy
Just got the box here it says they are: pure av rca audio cables. Any idea how i get the sound out the speakers now they are plugged into the tv and dvd player ??

Any idea how i get the sound out the speakers now they are plugged into the tv and dvd player ?? I'm guessing here... BUT I assume you have connected the dvd via scart and then connected the red+white between the TV and DVD. That isn't going to work. You will normally require a processor of some kind. Some tv's do have small outputs for rear speakers but they usually aren't very good. As others have mentioned to get the more modern 5.1/7.1 sound you will need either an optical or a coax connection to the processor. The processor will then connect to the 5.1 speakers. scotty71
As asked before what kit have you got. TV (new one) and a dvd player for starters. Have you got Sky and do you use an amp of any kind for the sound? I think the salesmen was probably refering to the TV's Internal Virtual Dolby Digital hence why he gave you the RCA's Scotty71

No digital input for them.
Meko
A few years ago when i got my amp i went into Richer Sounds for a 5.1 DVD player that i could do the same as you're trying to do - get 5.1 from the TV through the DVD surround sound. I was told that it won't happen as there is no sound input on a DVD, just output so it sounds as though you're going from your TV output into your DVD output. Jamesy
Mmm maybe i was misinformed. I have a samsung 50" plasma, lg 5.1 ss and the rca leads. Leads plugged into red/white ports on tv and then into dvd.

Leads plugged into red/white ports on tv and then into dvd. Got model numbers?.... The DVD player (audio) will plug directly into the lg 5.1 SS, not the tv. Although you should probably take the output from the telly into the LG SS as well. Assuming SCART from dvd to TV? in which audio is piped up via that to the TV, so you could use the TV's out to the SS.
nevins
Take the the rca leads they sold you and get your self an optical lead now fuss or worries then mate.
Jamesy
thanx again for all the help. Will get the models numbers in a bit. Just rang the shop the bloke said i just need to push the function button on the dvd remote and change the output/aux setting so the 5 speakers work when watching sky. The problem is if i turn on the dvd player i can only watch dvds, i cant have the dvd player on and watch sky.
Scott
Not sure if this is of any use to you but when I had my surround sound system it basically faked the 5.1 as I only used RCA's. I plugged my TV audio output into the surround sound RCA audio input. I then plugged everything into the TV. I had to do it this way as the surround sound only had 1 input. Everything that played through the TV then played audio through the surround sound system. The Surround sound would then fake the 5.1 sound and I would get sound from all 5 speakers. I had to select the right setting though as some of the audio settings only played through 2 speakers etc. This was a setting on the Surround Sound system though. Fun fun fun. MrRalphMan
Make sure you get the correct Digital lead to plug in along side your DVD player. I have a Optical lead from the Bluray player to the Amp and a Digitial Coax from the Sky HD box to the Amp too.

If you've got both plugged into the TV seperately you can control which you want by choosing the right AV channel on the TV.
scotty71
You will not get Dolby Digital (ac3) through phono's. Only by using an optical lead or coaxial. Dolby Pro Logic is a bit dated with todays dvd's. Dolby Digital Plus/TrueHD and DTS-HD is the current spec thats of course if your running a nice 7.1 capable amp via HDMI. A must if you want to get the most out of HDdvd/BluRay Scotty
