The-Plethora
Some guy decides its a good idea to smuggle heroin in China. Apparently he has the old faithful "bi-polar disorder" Oh thats fine then sir, can I carry your heroin to your car for you?
The-Plethora
Actually Chris thats a good thought, I am going for the traditional chicken friend rice and chips the second I get out of this dingy office today !
Tannhauser
probably, in the long term, saving the UK taxpayer a bunch into the bargain. Certainly, if the guy was indeed mentally ill, the anti-psychotics that might have allowed him to return to health would have cost the taxpayer dear. He was probably faking it because he knew what was coming to him, so I think the chinese authorities did the right thing by not investigating that possibility at all. After all, he had shown no previous record of mental illness, so that means that he can't have it now. I guess we will never know. One in the eye for the do-gooders, with their PC-gone-mad agenda of 'fair trials'. Enjoy your takeaway.

Couldn't agree more, over here they do the crime and then get off lightly by claiming all sorts like mental illness or an abused childhood etc. , didn't work in China though did it As they said he had no history of mental illness, he should have sussed out the penalty before trying to get drugs into their country. Tannhauser
As they said he had no history of mental illness, But there's no logic to that, is there? You can't make an assessment on whether someone is mentally ill purely on whether there is a history of it. The first time someone has a psychotic episode, by definition, they can't show a history of it. That's like saying someone can't possibly have committed a robbery because he has never done anything like that before. You, or anyone, could suffer a psychotic episode tomorrow, with no history at all. Now, granted, it's less likely, because we might have expected symptoms to have shown themselves already by the time you have reached your age (and the same applies to this guy, who was in his 50s). But there's no guarantee.
Chris Wilson
Easy money with no risk? Still looking..... Currently the UK benefits system seems hard to better. Want more? Work and take moderate chances as and if they appear. Don't be a drug mule in China though
Chris Wilson
I can't recall many of the big time villains of old claiming insanity. The Kray's didn't, as one example. It seems a modern association, apparently brought on when a trial looms, never when sunning themselves in some paradise with their ill gotten gains do they have these "psychotic episodes".. Abz
Don't think he deserved to be executed for it though! Not like his a known drug dealer. Colleague just told me you can get executed in China for tax evasion!

Like all of you we are not aware of all the details of this case so arent really in a position to comment with any authority. I believe he was imprisoned for 2 YEARS, that being the case I am assuming that the British Govt were negotiating with the Chinese Govt for a while regarding his mental condition, treatment and release, etc and didnt leave it to the last minute just for Political mileage. As for the Chinese, it would have been nice to know that their doctors assessed his mental state prior to putting him to sleep. Keeping his alleged mental illness aside, it is good to see criminals being dealt with properly, it sends a message to other chancers. Paul
I should think he would have been a bit off his trolley towards the end due to facing execution, but with no history of mental illness it would be very difficult to prove his mental state at the time he committed the crime. The UK government are now saying he had mental health problems yet there were no tests or proof of this was there? There is also talk of him being 'simple' and going there for a pop career, well Susan Boyle wouldn't get away with it and she's well mad
