Starting issue

My car (TT Auto) seemed to have a mind of its own this morning - turned the key to start it, didn't catch, so turned the key back.. but the engine continued turning over. Moving the key between on/off and even removing it made no difference at all! While I was considering disconnecting the battery (wasn't sure what else to do) it fired up, and I was then able to turn the engine off with the key.

It was turning over for 10-15s before it fired up, and when it did there was a not too nice noise (like a light grinding) and a bit of an off smell (presumably the starter).

I gave it a minute then started it again, and it was fine..

What on earth would cause that?

Seems to have stuck on properly today, will not stop trying to start (regardless of the car being started or not or the key being in the ignition). Switched the relay and it made no difference, car doesn't try and start without the relay in (apparently if it did it would point to a short?).. so I suppose that leaves the ignition barrel?

Currently waiting for the AA and recovery, since it's sitting outside work with the battery disconnected.. :(
