jackso11
just about to fit a walbro fuel pump in my car and have read matts fitting instructions. Quick question, what should I use to insulate the soldered connections? Matt says insulate but tape will not do.
wilson4347
Heatshrink connectors? think these have been used for this.
jackso11
I read that unless you use special fuel proof ones they don't last long either
Andy Blyth
Fuel proof sleeving. Not heatshrink, but easy to apply with practice.
jackso11
too late, done it with tape. Will have to order some of that stuff and change it soon.
jackso11
just seen a post that says tape in the fuel tank is a BIG no no. Will this be ok for a couple of days before I get some of the fuel resistant heat shrink? I did stagger the connections so they won't connect if the tape vanishes
Guest Suprafly
As long as the joints are staggered and clear from making contact with the cradle then theres no need to insulate them at all.
jackso11
hmm, I don't think I would trust them not to move and touch the cradle as some point in the future. I don't suppose anyone has a tiny bit of the fuel proof heat shink I could have? I don't really want to buy 100s of little sleeves when I only need to do 2 wires. Chewie
Try using self fusing silicon tape. I use to stuff all the time. Better than heat shrink. get it from most DIY emporiums.
jackso11
self fusing silicone tape? Is that basically fuel proof tape?
Chewie
Self fusing silicon tape. Does exactly what it says on the box. I suppose it's like a very viscous gel. I'm looking at a roll of the stuff as I type. Never tried it on the terminals of a fuel pump but there's always the first time... hang about just checked chemical resistance charts and silicon rubber isn't too clever with petrol. Scrub that idea.
dude
You can get brush on insulating tape, I will need to have a look and see if its fuel proof

Terminator
If you can't get fuel proof tape, just use some small bore fuel hose as a sleeve held in place with tie wraps. Worked fine on my car, 5 years on it was fine.
jackso11
fuel hose sleeve, good idea. I was thinking of some kind of sleeve but not sure what is fuel proof. I will go to halfords and see what they have to offer

Chris Wilson
I sell Raychem fuel proof heat shrink. £5 a foot.
jackso11
job done. I used fuel hose in the end. A word of warning to anyone searching for this in future, insulation tape is not a good idea. I put it on yesterday thinking it would be fine until I order some heat shrink, today when I got the pump out again the tape was just like plastic with a gooey mess on where the glue should be. 24hrs and it has turned to useless plastic, do not use even as a quick fix. Picture attached of what I ended up with.
