motley
Hi Guys I am having a bit of a heated discussion with the people who are supposed (that being the operative work) to be respraying my car. They reckon that the windows need to stay in as they are bonded and will break if they take them out!!! So, why do you take the windows out? And how likely are they to break? How easy to replace? Just want the information as back up to beat them up with. Thanks
JohnA
I'd ask the Dude mate

Thanks They are talking crap The windscreen can be taken out without breaking it, by cutting through the seal, you will need to replace with new seals though. When this is done here the bodyshop will get in an expert windscreen installer to replace the screen.
motley
Thanks Nic I am beginning to wish I had taken it somewhere else......... bloody pain in the arse this respray is turning out to be
eyefi
take it somewhere else before they start.
motley
Thats the way I am leaning at the moment. Can't do anything with at the moment. Its in the air with no back breaks they were completely shagged......... pads, calipers, discs the lot........ If I dont sort it out in the next day or so it will go somewhere else. Jake
The car can be painted just fine without removing the front and rear screens. The rear side windows are bonded in and very difficult to remove without breaking them. Dude does them "at your own risk" - if they break you'll have to pay extra. motley
Jake Are the front and back bonded in as well?
Jake
I don't think so, not 100% sure though. Sorry. My car was repainted without removing the front or rear screen and it's fine.
motley
I must admit unless you are paint technician and do respraying for a living are you going to even know? I don't think I could
JohnA
You really want as many things removed as possible (I'm sure you already know this!) So it's a safer bet if it's dismantled by someone who's done it before on Supras, preferably lots of times --- that's why I suggested the Dude (just saw you're up in Birmingham, lol...) motley
I appreciate what you are saying. I chose this garage cause they did a fantastic job respray and restoring my dad's 1961 consul classic and looking after another of his cars. It was such a lot of money to spend that I wanted someone I could trust to do the job. But this just seems like it is all too much trouble for them.......... Jake
I'd have definitely taken it to Liam Lovatt. He really knows his Supra stuff and is pretty local to you.
motley
Still considering it. He has helped me with quite a few things lately.... Lovely Guy If I take it away once the mechanics are done he will be the one that does the job.
Dale B
Just finished having mine resprayed. The bodyshop got a specialist in, they used a "cheese wire" affair to remove the front and rear screen, and refitted using new rubbers. It cost £150 apparently. michael
I thought it must have been different to the Rolf Harris who did mine
motley
Did they take at the back side windows or just the windows and front and back windscreens?
Supragal
My screen is out, both front windows too. rear 1/4s aren't. Tailgate it off in one piece if that helps.
motley
Thanks Rosie. That helps a lot. This garage thing is beginning to get very frustrating. I hate the girlie at the garage lets pat her on the head and do what we feel like thing!!!! I have given them a call and jumped up and down, it would appear they are now going to take everything but the 1/4's out although they are getting a price on replacing them if they break. And I am going to check my insurance to see if I am covered for all glass replacement.... cause if I am they can whip all the glass out and if it breaks I will claim on the insurance. After that doesn't count as a claim does it.
Kopite
all the glass was taken out when ENVY did mine, new seals were needed all round. better job if the glass all comes out
motley
How much did the seals cost or did they add it in to the cost of the respray?
Dale B
They took all windows out / off, all closing items came off, all door line trim came out. The window was removed from the hatch before the hatch was removed. Cost of seals was included in price
